  • Trick of the Trade Section on MOL?

This post is more geared to Mike Phillips, but brain storming off this thread would also be great by all.

I am a big Woodworker in addition to taking care of my cars. I get a lot of woodworking mags and my favorite sections to read are the" Tips" Sections. In there, there are so many short cuts, ideas and angles that sometimes are never thought of that sometimes, saves you time, get good results, and money.

So......... I was thinking (uh-oh), what about a section on Car Care Tips on the MOL Main Page?

Tip ie: Dedicating a small sponge for applying wheel dressing and keep it in a zip lock bag for next application.

I know the example above is lame, but you get my point. And, I realize the site is more product driven and we could still include the products by Meg's as follows.

Tip ie: Dedicating a small sponge for applying "Hot Shine High Gloss" wheel dressing and keep it in a zip lock bag for the next application.

    Wadya think?

I think it's a great idea .....I also think it would be helpful for people with the same cars to be able to exchange tricks for detailing their specific models....Corvette detailing might be different than let's say, Honda, or Hyundai (outside of the obvious difference )....I give the idea a big

      Hi Brad,

I'll talk to Tim about this and see what he thinks.

        Kind of like this?

        Here's a little tip
In the above picture, my son Rand has swished his mitt around inside the clear rinse water bucket after washing a section of the Corvette and now he's wringing out excess water before attempting to gather more soap solution. It's important to wring your mitt after rinsing or you will not be able to gather soap solution as your mitt will be saturate and full of fresh water.

          Mike,

Well, yes. These are all little tricks to know. I guess it wouldn't need to be a specific forum and could just be a thread within one of the forums. But the thread might get lost and therefor, people would tire looking for it. Alot of these tips are already embedded through out the forums (thus lots of reading), with easy things such as wringing out the mit (yours) or use of the two bucket method (whom ever invented that one). But I thought it would be neat to consolidate all these into simple quick hit tips. That's my thinking. I know you already have your hands full with this site and thought it might be cool. Even to go as far as what TKDDAD suggested where there are some unique things with particular cars. I know this site is more product driven but also might be great for a passer by to look up on here. And maybe, join.

After thinking about it, I like the idea of a tip forum too.

It would be interesting if it was left open, and then compiled, (and verified for working/not hurting) every once in a while. I am sure it wouldnt go on forever, once people post what they do.

                Thumbs Up

This would be nice. I know Mustangs have some really handy little tricks about drying them, etc...Like most other cars I'd imagine.

                    Great!

The tips should be easy to find, therefore let's group them!

How about a page with a car is pictured on it (side view), with accessories all around. With the mouse we could highlight the desired areas, for example: glass/glass tips, or the G-100 for DA tips, or brushes, pads, etc., etc.

That sounds pretty good, but I wonder if that's beyond the scope of the vBulletin software?

Nice idea if it will work though.

Perhaps we should see how it goes (grows). I was thinking that we post something in the Detail 101 Forum and just go with it for now and to see how stuff is added to the list. If it gets lost, maybe Mike can make it a Sticky as long as posting to a Sticky is allowed. I come from a place (where I work, shhhhh) where if it is too big or complicated, it will never get done because it bcomes out of reach with limited resources. Therefore, start small and improve within time to make it as envisioned.

Personally, I don't have a lot of "Tricks" at the moment. But........ When I read old threads, I could quote the persons Thread and plop it in there (as others could too). But of course, some of yous guys other new tricks would be great too.

If the idea takes off, then it will be up to Mike and the rest of the crew behind the curtain to decide if they want to designate it's own catagory. So, with that..... if we can agree, maybe Mike (means more coming from one with such Authority) can post something in the Detail 101 Forum and we can start building from there. Yes?

It isn't on the Frontpage of MOL, but there is now a dedicated sub-forum for your idea...

                              Thanks Mike ! !

This winter, I plan on going through older threads and cutting and pasting the "Tricks" to consolidate some of these ideas in the section you just created (Tricks of the Trade). I do most of my computing in the winter months and so, that will be a good time to do that. Thanks again for doing it and I hope it gets used.
