When did coated leather start showing up in cars?

Like clear coat, it can be said it started around mid 80's, can leathers be pinned down to when they started being coated?

I think this started around the mid-90's when about 95% of all car manufacturers started using a vinyl coating on their leather interiors. Do you think that the coating helps protect the leather in the long run?
