Hi everyone,
Long time, no visit. I still do detailing part-time, but have been pretty busy with work so I don't do it very often. However, my garage is still very well stocked with Meguiar's
I have a question that has nothing to do with detailing, but I was hoping someone here would have a suggestion about it. At my job, we deal often with bolts (usually set screws) that keep on backing out. We use blue or red LocTite, depending on the application, but a lot of times there is grease or oil in the threads that the bolt is going into. I'm assuming the LocTite doesn't do much good if there is oil or grease in the threads. Often, the bolt goes into a pillow block bearing or some other part so the threads are not easy to clean out. So, my thought was to use non-chlorinated brake cleaner to clean the threads. I want something that will clean thoroughly and quickly, and dry quickly without residue. However, my concern is, I have heard that brake cleaner can damage plastic and rubber. In the case of the pillow block bearings, it's very difficult to avoid getting the brake cleaner on the rubber bearing seal. I've wiped it off immediately without seeing any ill effects, but I wanted to see if any of you have any suggestions about whether that's a foolish thing to do, or any other suggestions of what else might work to clean the oil out of the threads. I have heard the non-chlorinated brake cleaner isn't as likely to cause damage as the old, chlorinated cleaner was.
The other consideration is the smell. We would be using it in a gym environment often, and it's hard to avoid spraying it where others could smell it. Obviously we'll be as careful as possible, and warn people that are nearby before spraying it. But if someone has a suggestion of something that would do a comparable job and not smell so bad, that would be awesome too!
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Lydia
