  • Ever try to drift a FWD car? I did. [Video]

So as some of you may recall, I have had the opportunity not once, but twice to be part of a special social media movement put on for Ford for the Fiesta. This time around it was for the 2014 Fiesta ST (turbocharged, 197HP, 6sp manual, Recaro seats, etc).

Once a month Ford sends me on some sort of mission... and this time around my mission was to try and drift the car with the help of a professional. It was great fun and a lot harder than I expected. Check it out

Did you like the little car? I've only heard good things about it! Dealership near me has one, I'll see if I can talk them in to giving me a test drive.

How were you initiating the drifts? Since it is fwd, you can't use the "moar throttle" method I don't guess . Looks like crazy lift off oversteer or were you working the rear brakes? Jealous of this! Looks like a lot of fun!

    Awesome video!

Fifth Gear's Tiff Needel and Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond all just adore this car. They've all shot plenty of footage of the thing sliding sideways on various tracks, or eating up two lane canyon roads. Didn't you say you were going to bring that up to the office so we could play around a bit???????

I don't just like this car... I love it. It is seriously amazingly well tuned. It single-handedly contests the suggestion that you can't have a fun to drive, track-eating, turn-carving, rear-wheel drive-beating front-wheel drive car. It's that good.

I have done a LOT with this car (several tracks, mountain roads, drag strip, etc), and this car always performs beyond my expectations. I used to be an automotive journalist, so I know a thing or two about cars... and have driven every car in the segment. The Fiesta ST is literally the uncontested best subcompact car available for sporty driving.

As for how I initiated, I entered at speed and then either gave a slight flick one way and then went back the other way + e-brake, or I simply came in hot and with so much angle it induced a slide, which I aided with the e-brake. It was pretty darn challenging since I was limited strictly to steering and brake input to maintain the slide, but wildly fun.

Michael - I only have the car until 12-13! But I am going up to LA for the final Fiesta Movement party on the 13th - maybe I should schedule a stop in Irvine?

          Looks like heaps of fun!

I was going to ask the same thing about how you initiated the slides. It certainly looks like there was some assistance from the handbrake!

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Thanks guys It was tremendously fun.

As for needing the e-brake, believe it or not, I tried a few runs without it and it was actually very similar... the rear-end on the Fiesta ST is very flickable so it is surprisingly easy to get it to step out.
