So I get a request to detail for a customer. I showed up at the time requested only to find 4 guys standing around the car I would be detailing ( thought I was going to get mugged ). I was greeted by the customer and was introduced to the gaggle standing around. I have detailed for this customer before. The car I was detailing was a hand-me-down car that his daughter is now driving. I did a walk around with the guy and thanked him for washing the car before my arrival. The paint was heavily scratched on the roof and trunk. The sides and hood had small issues. Come to find out that the gaggle was there to settle a bet. The bet was that the trunk and roof issues were beyond repair. The customer told me there would be an extra $100 in it for be above and beyond the normal fee if the areas in question could be corrected. So the questions and can't be done comments started. I thought a fight might start. Comments like " Oh he has a D/A money in the bank " , " He has foam pads, this is going to take forever" . I started with UC and a yellow pad on speed 2 and did a test area, up/down and side/side 3 times and wiped. Inspected the area and decided to get the M105, as the UC got some of each of the scratches, however, as to not be there all day I chose to change up. While I'm digging out the M105, the gaggle starts modifying their bets. I broke out some tape and placed it on the trunk between the test area and the next area I would be working on. He comes the questions, " what's with the tape " , and I explained that I prefer to use the least evasive product to do a given job, hence the test area. I also changed to a black finishing pad to use with the M105. I do the second test area with a bit better result. The gaggle start modifying their bets. The customer is looking worried and very uncomfortable. He comes over behind me and whispers that there is additional money to make the issues go away. I pulled the tape off and went to get another pad ( yellow ). The gaggle are betting again. I start feeling like I better get started and get this car done. M105, yellow pad, and turned the buffer up from 2 to 4 and did another area. All scratches with a few exceptions came out after doing the 3 passes. I did 2 more passes and the area came clear. The gaggle need to inspect and the gaggle all went in the house. I got rid of the tape and started the car after 45 minutes of screwing around. An hour has passed and the customer comes out to check my progress. the trunk us done and 3/4 of the roof was complete. The customer and the gaggle return 15 minutes later. Both areas area clear with mild hazing left. The gaggle, " he is putting scratches in the paint that was not there before". Before I could say anything, the gaggle are starting to welch on bets made. While the gaggle rant on I got my M205 and another black pad and started on the roof. The gaggle are so wrapped up in their now argument, I was able to get one side of the roof done and was moving to the other side to complete the roof. The gaggle now move to the completed side and start another argument. The gaggle go back into the house, I kept my head down and worked the car. The gaggle started leaving and the customer came over to the car. I come to find out that the gaggle wanted to get the car detailed for the customers daughter and the gaggle was betting on the outcome of the car to see who was going to pay for the detail or some crazy thing like that. I had my best single day of detailing ever. Not only did I get the full price of the detail with paint correction, but I also got a $400 dollar tip from the customer. Come to find out that the customer made $200 and got the detail at no cost to him and the gaggle paid for the tip and the detail. What a great day, win/win in my book. Looking forward to a call from that customer again.

Re: Went TNOG on customer.
Great story!
I got a bit of a chuckle out of your frequent use of the term "the gaggle" tooOriginally posted by BluelineI own a silver vehicle and a black vehicle owns me. The black one demands attention, washing, detailing, waxing and an occasional dinner out at a nice restaurant. The silver one demands nothing and it looks just fine. I think the black vehicle is taking advantage of me, and the silver car is more my style. We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Re: Went TNOG on customer.
I felt a bit bad about using slow speeds on the buffer and a finishing bad with 105, however I did not feel that bad. When I got back to the house, I made the mistake telling the wife and here came the hand out palm up. Now it is just a memory, LOL.BMW ZSCCA Area Rep SoCal

Re: Went TNOG on customer.
Definition of Gaggle In my opinion----- when 2 or more are in a group that when seen by an outsider, looks like ciaos is about to break out. The gaggle were uncles, brothers and other family members that came together to get the car done for the guys daughter. I need to find another one like this about twice a month. Most likely will not happen twice in a lifetime though.BMW ZSCCA Area Rep SoCal
