Re: Body Shop Painted Without Telling Me... Now I'm Worried

Somebody is responsible for paying the bill . I guess the insurance company and body shop seen something wrong with the tailgate . They offered to repair and repaint in yor best intrest . The body shop should have called and explained what they have found wrong , how they are correcting it , and who is paying . Is the truck under warrentty yet ? Maybe the factory is picking up the tab . Actually I didn't see why your so upset . You stated it had touch up paint on it . If I received a free paint job and it looks good . I would be doing cartwheels . My concern would be shop / customer communications .

I haven't picked it up yet, I will get it Monday hopefully. It's not that I'm upset, I'm just a little dumbfounded... And I've not only heard, but have seen many body shop paint jobs not come out so well, hell even reputable dealerships... I've seen their painting not turn out so well.. overspray on windows and stuff etc...

If everything turns out well, ill be fine. This truck is a 2002 there is no more warranty or anything. My dad said since this body shop is authorized or whatever by AAA insurnace (what we have) they just do what they want and AAA will cover it without questioning the tab, unless it's way unrealistic.

Re: Body Shop Painted Without Telling Me... Now I'm Worried

Alright just got it back today. Pretty satisfied overall. Paint job turned out good imo. They painted the tailgate OFF the truck so there was no chance for overspray. Everything looks straight and what not. Just the little things bothered me ya know, like traces of "tape gum" on the sides of the tailgate, the backside of the tailgate still had some areas of what appears to be dust from when they sanded and painted the tailgate. My controls on the interior had some fingerprint marks from what appears to be from someone who had some sort of grey dust on their hands. Not sure why they had to touch the fan speed and temp control knobs... whatever.

Totally forgot to ask to see paint thickness... there are some minor hairline scratches so I'll wheel those out after a few weeks. Orange peel is low, and matches the original amount of orange peel on the rest of the truck haha. No signs of holograms in my eyes. Took a light to it and didn't see any signs of them. Again, overall, I am pretty happy. I just wish these body shops cared as much as we do about quality and perfection.

Glad to see it turned out okay for you! The color matches good too?

Don't even get me started on how dealerships care for their customers vehicles.

I am glad it turned out well for you . The shops do care about quality and perfection , or they wouldn't be in business. About the left over tape residue and light dust , if you want something done right you have to do it yourself . Unfortunally they cleaned it to industry standards . Most people would be OK with it , However most people don't go on MOL . We are the few who care a little more . It will take you 5 minutes to bring it to your standard . Then you will look back and say YES !!!

Thanks! Yeah, well from what I can tell it matches. It's hard to tell exactly because the tailgate does not line up with any other painted body panel. Since it's also a 90degree angle from any other panel, it's difficult to get the exact same lighting on each side. In my opinion, even if it is slightly off, I can't tell, and I don't think anyone would even know it was repainted.

Thanks! I know... (as far as the standards thing go and what most people expect, or what they lack in their expectations haha). I took 10 minutes to quick detail the outside and did a quick wipe on the interior with APC+ and it's back to new.

I'm happy with the way it turned out.

It's alot less then $500 to refinish a tailgate. Something else is going on?

Good luck with that. I don't know of a single body shop in Michigan that has or uses a PTG. Especially one that will measure just the clear.

David are you from Michigan? I'm on my phones Android app so I have no clue on your location, but nonetheless, I went to AutoMetrics in Troy, MI.

Also is it a lot less to paint a tailgate than $500? I was just throwing out a number as my dad took a 98 dodge ram there to get a quote to repaint roof... $1000.00.

BTW, grand total to fix everything.... $2851.

Re: Body Shop Painted Without Telling Me... Now I'm Worried

I'm in Grosse Pointe. I know those guys very well & go into all their locations on a regular basis. You might have been better off going a few more yards down the street to Fischer Body Refinishing IMHO. Both are known to do good work though...

$500 to refinish a tailgate is too much. Especially when the damage appears to be minimal. Their labor rate is $38/$40 per hour so you do the math?

And as far as your Dad's roof on his truck, $1000 seems kinda high too, but I don't know the circumstances of the repair. They probably had to pull the front and back cab glass which is a little pricy.

Let me know if you ever want me to inspect your trunk or need any body shop/detail advice.

Re: Body Shop Painted Without Telling Me... Now I'm Worried

Yeah sorry I just threw $500 out there. If I remember correctly, AutoMetrics charged $35 an hour for paint and I believe they had 3.5 hours or something on it. So yeah it isn't $500. And as for the roof on the Dodge Ram, the guy said they would have to remove the glass and the seals and such...

That's great to know your local though and so you do this stuff for a living then? You gotta help me figure out the best way to remove the dressing I currently have on the cladding on my Avalanche, as well as get rid of a couple "streaks" I have on one of the plastic panels... I am going to try a new product called Refinish Restorer. The Avalanche guys say this is one of the better products for durability and stuff. The catch with this stuff is though the surface needs to be prepped perfectly and must be a completely clean surface in order for it to bond correctly.
