  • Gimmicky type advertising...

I was flipping through the channels today and saw Professor Amos - selling "The Bom" on a shopping channel. In short it was essentially a quick detailer for $19.95 with a MF towel and some other towel. He used it on the car on windows on leather seats (he said the leather seats had a clear coat on them, not sure on that) he used it on anything.

They sprayed what is suppose to be acid on the finish of the car. and wiped it off showing how it protects the finish. Hey then wiped the acid off with one of the included towels without gloves and then continued to use the towel all over the car. Seems strange to me. I have seen others spray lighter fluid on a car then light it, I guess to show the protection.

Anyone else think this stuff is kind of gimmicky? They may very well be good products but they don't seem like real world tests. You know, let bird dropping sit on the car for a few hot days or tar or whatever.

I don't know just food for thought.

Most automotive leather is coated with a thin clear rubbery coating. That coating is what your protecting and that coat protects the leather.

Covered Leather (Urethane, Vinyl or MB-Tex):
Since late ‘80s early ‘90s 85% of vehicle manufacturers have used covered leather for their interior upholstery. Its made from natural hides, but uniquely treated with a light pigmented urethane resin coating or a vinyl covering to make it more viable for automotive seating. It retains the softness of natural top-grain leather but resists fading in direct sunlight, leathers worst enemy

Spills wipe off with a moistened cloth, the urethane resin or the vinyl covering require oils to stop it from drying out (just like a paint system's clear coat) the leather also requires replacement of natural oils. Clean, condition and apply a UVR protection as in items 1, 2 & 3 on page 2.

Covered leather like clear coated paint requires oils to stop it from drying out, the myth that oils (from polish or leather cleaners) is just that a myth. If you do not provide the paint/leather with oils it will dry out and crack

Identifying characteristics- uniform colour and grain patterns; will not scratch easily; water drops will not change colour.
