I will be spending the second week of October in Istanbul with my wife. Any suggestions for things to see and do, and things to avoid?

Avoid getting stopped by the shoe whiners in the street.
As your ignoring them they will throw their brush down in front of you, common politeness is to pick it up and hand it back, but then they start on your shoes and you're trapped.
Just completely ignore them.
You do have to try bar Istanbul 360. This is an awesome rooftop bar, great food and drinks.
A bit of a pain to find, but google it.
I'm sure you'll like it.
