Russo & Steele Auctions Street Promo

We made it to Monterey this afternoon and Russo & Steele Auctions has a bunch of cars on display lining the street in front of our hotel. Here are a few teaser shots to whet your appetite for what's to come over the weekend. We'll have more pictures posted throughout the weekend from Concorso Italiano, Russo & Steele Auctions, Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and others.

This is what Russo & Steele calls "Monterey Sports and Muscle at the Marriott" and it runs all weekend, displaying a group of cars prior to sale. Today's group was heavy with late '50s Chrysler/Dodge/DeSoto iron, but there were a few other cars out as well.

Part 3: Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

Later in the day I managed to head out to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for a bit of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.

All kinds of cars at this event, like this old Lotus sports racer

and this Ford Cortina. The great Jim Clark used to race one of these between Formula 1 events, his in classic white with green stripe livery.

Lots of Lotus cars, actually, including this formula car

A handful of these mid to late '30s Bugatti Type 31 Grand Prix cars were on hand too.

This collection of French racers included this Talbot Lago

The banner behind the car tells the story here.

              Classic sports racer here

              Great fun in small packages!

              Another Lotus!

This car was shown as a 1956 Avia MK3 Streamliner, built in Czechoslavakia and powered by a BMW 750cc 4 stroke opposed piston motocycle engine.

1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa 625 TRC LM - an early Testa Rossa built specifically to run at LeMans. This was one of only two built with a 2.5L 4 cylinder and back in '57 it would run 0-60 in 5.8 seconds!

              A pre WWII MG racer

A pair of Ferrari 250 GTOs (this is serious money!!)

1963 Jaguar E-Type Lightweight, one of only 12 built

Again, the picture tells the story

Another Bugatti Type 31 Grand Prix car, this one unrestored obviously

1963 Aston Martin "Project 214", a modified DB4 built in an attempt to duplicate Aston's win at Le Mans in '59. The 3,995cc engine made 355 HP at 10,500 rpm (!) but was a DNF at Le Mans that year.

1957 AC Aceca, predecessor to the AC Ace (the basis for Carrol Shelby's AC Cobra)

Ex Mario Andretti Lotus F1 car

Ex Nigel Mansell Lotus F1 car

A pair of Bob Tullius Group 44 Jaguars

              D-Type Jaguar sports racer

One of the most original Jaguar XKSS in existance, nicely patina'd throughout

Jaguar XJR-9. This very car won Le Mans in 1988, the first time for Jaguar since 1957 and seventh time overall. The Silk Cut Jaguar team also won the 24 Hours of Daytona and the World Sportscar Championship that same year.

A few shots of cars on track, here a Mercedes 300SL Gullwing

Part 4: Ferrari Detail at RM Auctions

We had a little project at RM Auctions - a quickie detail (we had just two hours to refresh a car) and we had a choice of a black 1962 Triumph TR4 or a red 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Coupe. We like a challenge so we opted for the Ferrari, even though the paint was horribly swirled.

This is how all the emblems looked when we started - as if someone had scooped a paste wax out of the can and just globbed it on and left it there!

We did a couple of quick test spots and settled on Ultimate Compound via W8207 polishing pad on the G110v2

The gentleman behind me was a prospective buyer, very interested in the car.

We did some trim clean up to get rid of all the old wax build up around the edges.

                  A little QD.....

                  .... a soft brush....

.... and a bamboo cooking skewer.

I quickly taught Allyson the techique and then tasked her with cleaning up all the emblems and trim while I continued buffing.

A couple thousand percent better than when we started!

Yep, single stage paint.... that is Ferrari essence on the face of the pad!

A little All Metal Polish to at least brighten up the wheels. They were so bad that each wheel deserved several hours attention, but we simply didn't have the time.

After following up with Ultimate Polish via W9207 finishing pad, we opted for Ultimate Wax paste to finish her off.

All done, and the paint simply looks brighter and redder.

Gotta love a nice reflection shot!

That's a beautiful BMW 507 reflecting in the door of the Ferrari 250. Nice pair of cars!

The gentleman who was overseeing the car for the seller told us that his boss is a Kuwaiti Sheik who shipped the car to the States just for this auction. He described what we did as "transforming the car" and emailed a picture to the owner. He was, to say the least, thrilled with the outcome. I wished we'd had more time, but when the owner is that happy, what more can you ask for?

We got into the hall just as the car went up for auction....

And the hammer fell at $185,000!

Incidentally, that BMW 507 reflected in the door above once belonged to Ursulla Andres and sold for $975,000 a few hours later.

Part 6: Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The grand daddy of all car shows - a truly amazing experience. This year they celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Ferrari 250 GTO, Mercedes Benz, and the Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. Any one of these would be pretty amazing in and of itself, but all three at once??? Notes on the various cars supplied by the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance Car Guide

1960 Jaguar E2A. This car was the design link between the D-Type and E-Type Jaguars and was raced in the 1960 24 Hours of LeMans by Dan Gurney and Walt Hangsen. It equaled the fastest lap time, but retired after 6 hours with engine failure.

A mid '30s Packard - apologies for not any more info on this beauty.

                        1939 Talbot-Lago T120

1926 Bugatti Type 23 Brescia Lavocat it Marsaud. This was Bugatti's first commercially successful car.

One of several Ferrari 250 GTOs in attendance this year, celebrating 50 years of the model. This is a 1964 250 GTO/64 Scaglietti Berlinetta. Only 3 were ever built like this, with this particular being the last 250 GTO ever built.

1911 Benz 200 HP "Blitzen Benz".

Number 722. So designated because it left the start line at the 1955 Mille Miglia at 7:22 AM with Stirling Moss behind the wheel and Denis Jenkinson acting as navigator. Yes, this is indeed the actual car.

1934 Ford Model 40 Special Speedster.

1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne. In several hours this car would drive off with the grand prize.

Another of the many Ferrari 250 GTOs on hand, this one is a 1962 Scaglietti Berlinetta

                        1937 Talbot-Lago T150-SS Figoni & Falaschi Coupe

1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Oxford Tourer

Yep, another 250 GTO. Only 36 were ever made, and 22 of them were on hand today.

1912 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Barker Style Tourer

                        Moss's '55 Mercedes 300 SLR

Imagine completing 1,000 miles in roughly 10 hours, along open winding roads up and down Italy in this!

A huge collection of Ferrari 250 GTOs, celebrating 50 years of this iconic sports racer. This photo represents somewhere betwee a quarter of a billion (yes, Billion) and half a billion dollars worth of vehicles.

Again, the 1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne that ultimately won Best of Show.

                        Interior of the Voisin

1932 Austro Daimler 635 Armbruster Sport "Bergmeister" Cabriolet

1929 Minerva Type AM Murphy Convertible Sedan. Minerva was a Belgian marque founded in 1899. This particular car was originally ordered for Mrs. Campbell, as in Campbell Soup.

Barry interviewing Evert Louwman, owner of the Louwman Museum in The Hague, Netherlands.

                        1909 Knox Open Touring

1931 Marmon Sixteen LeBaron Convertible Sedan

                        1939 Talbot-Lago T120

                        1938 Alfa Romeo 6C 2300 Touring Coupe

1939 SS Cars SS100 Two Seater Sports. SS Cars were the forerunners of Jaguar, with SS standing for Swallow Sidecar. Following WWII it was no longer appropriate to use the SS name, hence Jaguar came into being.

No specific information on this Rolls Royce

1934 Ford Model 40 Special Speedster. This is the second of three Speedsters and was built for Edsel Ford by Robert Gregorie. The custom body sits on a Model 40 chassis and the engine is a stock 75HP Model 40 flathead with straight exhausts that run through the frame to the rear.

1935 Pierce-Arrow 845 Coupe. This car was prepped for the event, and beautifully so, by MOL member Nick Chapman.

1929 duPont Model G Merrimac Club Sedan

Sir Stirling Moss looks over a collection of Mercedes Benz "White Knights" race cars from the mid 1920s and earlier.

1911 Benz 200 HP "Blitzen Benz". On April 23, 1911 at Daytona Beach, FL, Bob Burman set the world speed record of 141.7mph in this 21.5 liter beast. Yes, 21.5 liters!!! And that from just 4 cylinders!!

1955 Lancia Aurelia B245 Pinin Farina Spyder. Only 240 of these were made, and this one came in from Hong Kong for the event.

                        1926 Renault 40CV Labourdette Skiff

Jay Leno discusses this 1916 Winton Model 33 Touring, shown in the "Prewar Preservation" class, with it's owner.

                        1953 Fiat 8V Ghia Supersonic

1952 Lancia Aurelia B52 Vignale Coupe

                        1950 Talbot-Lago T26 Saoutchik Grand Sport Coupe

1969 Mercedes-Benz 600 Presidential Landaulet. Only 10 were built for various heads of state, this particular car for the Romanian Government. It was used by Nicolae Ceausescu until the late 1970s

1911 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost Hooper Limousine

1957 Dual-Ghia Convertible. Powered by a Chrysler HEMI engine, these cars (only 117 made) were popular with the Rat Pack - Sinatra, Martin, Davis, etc.

1948 Dodge Derham Club Coupe. This is a one off car, commissioned by Chrysler and based on the Dodge five window Club Coupe.

                        1930 Stutz M Lancefield Coupe

                        1914 Stutz Series E Bearcat

The Best of Show Voisin, here driving off with it's Most Elegant Closed Car award prior to the big one. Notice the solid arched roof that slides open.

Barry Meguiar presents Second in Class award to the 1937 Frazer Nash-BMW 328. This car was one of the first six delivered to the UK and was raced at both Brooklands and Crystal Palace prior to WWII. It is in original, unrestored condition.

Sir Stirling Moss drives the very same Mercedes 300 SLR with which he won the 1955 Mille Miglia road race in Italy. Here he's just picked up the Mille Miglia Award.

This 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Scaglietti Berlinetta, the first 250 GTO ever built, drives off with the Strother MacMinn Most Elegant Sports Car Trophy.

Obscured by fireworks, confetti and gold foil streamers, the 1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne collects Best of Show honors.
