  • Health Risk due to prolonged use of a DA?

This is not meant to scare anyone from using a DA but just a curiosity I had using a DA the other day.

As we all know, a DA can have quite a bit of vibration. Anyone think that detailers who use a DA exclusively may be at a higher risk of arthritis due to machine use?

Of course, a lot of activities can lead to increased risk of arthritis, carpal tunnel, etc. but I wonder if the motion caused by a DA could expedite the symptoms of arthritis.

Once again, not trying to cause any wars over the safety of the machine but it's just a curiosity.

I have some arthritis in my hands (age related) and to be honest, the vibration actually feels kinda good. If I were to be using a DA for hours and days on end, I can imagine just the opposite though.

Respiratory Protection (N95): Materials such as aluminium oxide (Aluminium oxide is on EPA's TRI list if it is a fibrous form) or silicon carbide (Nuisance particulate-Accumulation in lungs) used in polishes and compounds, and powdered fillers (Crystalline silica poses a serious inhalation hazard because it can cause silicosis) and Isocyanate clear coat residue represent a hazard to your lungs and may cause respiratory distress. Use a NIOSH-approved half face respirator equipped with a combination filter cartridge should be worn while using them

Consult the current 3M Respiratory Selection Guide for additional information or call 1-800-243-4630 for 3M technical assistance.

Shawn,Being self employed, you are your best and only health advocate. If you are concerned, I might suggest visiting with your family doctor or if you are returning to school, discuss it with a medical professional at your university. As Star Kicker pointed out, respiratory protection maybe a good idea. Hearing protection might be another. Not sure of the effects of squinting at swirls in the sunlight. The injuries you incur today may not show up for years and maybe not at all. Your doctor or someone in occupational medicine may better advise you than we can. Speaking from my own limited experience, I start the day with Tylenol 'cuz my hands hurt at the end of a day. I can blame part of that on genetics. Thanks mom, dad, grandma, granddad, etc, etc.

One for sure health risk is that you get OCD haha

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

                    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
                    Remove swirls my friends.

Ha! +1 on that! I really do have OCD (mild) but I find it helps me when detailing. I make sure I always do things right for the customer
