  • Paint question

Lets say I was painting/or respraying a car, what gives it depth and a wet look? More color coat or more clear coat? If I wanted the ULTIMATE wet looking black paint, would it be by adding more base or clear?

    Just curious!

    Re: Paint question

Once the color coat is thick enough to give you a smooth and even base, you have enough. The depth on a non-metallic color comes from the clarity and smoothness of the clear. In show car circles, many feel that black is the "blackest" when it's not covered by clear, but that's really splitting hairs.

Also, use the highest quality paint you can afford. It makes a difference.

        Re: Paint question

This is a LONG ways off, but I eventually want to respray my HHR. I want to go back with the factory black color, but also as an engineering student, I like to know the ins and outs of everything.

          Re: Paint question

I would say the mix of the paint your using would show the color and depth. Think of GM's black. Look into deep. Ever notice it has some brown to it???

Now look at some PPG 9500?? I think it is. Its their straight black. Spray a pannel....do it in base once and rub it out. You will notice the difference.

            Re: Paint question

On my HHR, the black does in fact show a little brownish, I have even mentioned it before on here. However, on the Yukon/Sierra Denali, the 'onyx black' is mesmerizing. Is it possible GM is using two different types of black?

              Compare the paint codes.
