  • Looking to buy new tires, need help.

i have a 06 sentra with tire size 195/55/R16. right now i have the OE tire on which were firestone firehawk gta and they are very loud and unconfortable. i need a all season tire, i dont drive hard or speed, i dont want something with to stiff a sidewall but i also dont want a tire that when i turn my sidewall rubs the ground and messes up my tire dressing. what do you guys recommend?

Have you looked at reviews on tirerack.com?

My dad and I both used it for our last tires to get rid of the OE ones, and they seem good. We got the top tire of the ranking list in our categories, and both have been good.

Can see where yours rank now, and what might be better/worse.

I just put a set of Continental Extreme Contact DWS on my Evo. They are a night and day difference between the stock Yokohama Advan's as far as noise and comfort. I lost a little handling ability but gained excellent all weather traction. My car is AWD but people who have FWD and RWD report great things about them. They have a 520 tread wear rating so they should last a while with proper rotation/inflation. Take a look on tirerack.com.

I bought a used Volvo S60 that had those Firestones on it. I agree with you on road noise. I am approaching the wear bars on the tires and looking to replace with the Continentals as mentioned above.

Do it! You won't regret it! I also forgot to mention I drive pretty "spirited" and I found the grip on these tires to be great. They have a tendency to roll a bit during hard cornering, but I've yet to hear them cry for mercy. The stock Yokohama's were harsh and hard as rocks in freezing temps. The tires perform as they should. Not hardcore like the Yoko's but not as pedestrian as you may think. They're a great trade off for someone looking to maintain some performance and all weather traction.

Might be a bit more performance oriented than you are looking for, but I believe it was Car and Driver that did a 10 tire comparison and the VERY inexpensive Hankook Ventus V12 Evo K110's ranked #2.

I don't think you will find a better affordable performance tire.

I would go with Sumitomo. I forget the model number on mine, but I love them. They are quiet, somewhat cheap, and very reliable. I have had two sets in the last two years on my 350z's "daily" wheels.

Has anyone used General Altimax tires?

Never but General makes decent tires.

We are currentlly running General Altimax tires on our 2001 Honda Odyssey EX minivan. They are a good choice for an all-season tire. They have a directional tread. Grip well in the wet. They do pretty well in snow. Hal (what I call the Odyssey) is quieter than when it was running the Michelin Symmetry tires that were on there before. Only been in service for about 5000 miles, I can't really comment about estimated treadwear.
