Does anyone know how to get these moldings off without damage?

Hey Guys,

Just curious? I have an unsightly issue on my 2006 Impala SS. I was wondering if anyone knows how to remove these side moldings near the windows, without damaging them of course. The finish on them is horrible. In our eyes? Absolutely unacceptable! They are the moldings on the side of my car between the windows. There are 2 on each side where the front door and back doors meet next to the windows.


If you look at where the windows meet you see 2 black shiney "feels like aluminum" pieces. Half of the finish on them is gone and it is very unsightly. I want to try to rattle can them, but would rather remove them other than taping off and hoping for no overspray. Old to detailing but new to painting..... LOL

Any ideas?

Not being a smart @@@, give your local chevy dealer a call (stop by) and go to the Parts Dept and talk to them. They can bring up a pic on their computer. May not show 'how' to remove 'em but you'd see how they are installed.

I don't have time during the day, but I will send you the procedure from the factory shop manual if you can wait until tonight. It's actually quite easy. My beater is an Olds Intrigue, same "W" platform as the Impala, that has a similar molding clad in black plastic, which were dried out, cracking and peeling. I removed the moldings, shaved off the cladding and polished the stainless underneath. Looks great and didn't cost me a dime.
