  • Tips for my upcoming work, 1995 Morgan.

    Hi all !

Even touogh i see my self as an experienced detailer i sometimes like having other people come with suggestions about a special work.

Im now up for a challenge so i thought it would be nice to see what you people would recommend.

Its an english Morgan from 1995.
See pics below. Hope the links will work.

Its not a clearcoat so everything will turn green
Im thinkin of starting of with the G220 V2 with polishing pad and 105/205, i hope i dont have to use the rotary.

    What do you guys think?
heres another morgan i did that wasnt so neglected to start from.

As you see this is not the easiest car to detail

So feel free to comment and make suggestions. i will post the result pictures within a week from now.

    Thanx for a great forum!

#80 is always good for single stage paint also.

As Mat suggested, I would start within M80/ M83 range, as both products work fantastic on single stage paints. Some test spot(s) would be good to see defect removal progress.

Do you have access to Lake Country Kompressor pads? They work great on curved panels:

Morgans are beautiful cars. Friend of mine had one where he lived in London. With V8 engine it was a real beast.

For as wonderful a product as M105 is, we would strong urge you to back away from it for this job, especially when using a DA. First off, it's probably going to be waaaaay over aggressive for what will likely prove to be fairly soft paint. Second, with all the dust it will generate, especially if the paint is dried out at all, you'll spend more time cleaning up after yourself than correcting the paint.

Start out very gentle on this paint, and take your time with some test spots to dial in a process. We've worked on some original single stage European paints that were incredibly delicate and that can be unbelievably frustrating if you go too aggressive on it. They can be quite easy to correct with a very gentle approach. M80 is a gentle approach, and single stage paint loves the stuff. If you've never used it on single stage paint you could be in for a real treat! If luck is on your side the paint will respond beautifully to it and you'll have a great time getting to know this car.

That potential dryness could play a big role in correcting this car. Drier products like M105 and M83 may have all the lubricant in them pulled out by the paint and you'll be fighting the products all day long (not to mention that M105 is, like we said earlier, probably just total overkill here). M07 can do wonders on dried out paint to bring back not only some of the color and gloss, but also the workability of the paint. Experiment a bit before you just jump right in and start buffing - try some M07 in one spot, then M80 next to it and/or overlapping it. If you haven't used these products much in the past don't sweat it, they're very easy to work with, very forgiving. Just go easy on that paint to start.

You've got 16 year old original paint here, and a lot of complex curves, high spots on vents, etc. You may find the smartest approach for the vents is to do them by hand and keep the buffer away from them altogether. Tape will be your friend on this project - use it liberally!!!

And make sure the battery on your camera is fully charged. We want to see pix of this project as you move forward with it. Morgans are awesome cars with a very rich history. Enjoy this project!

Re: Tips for my upcoming work, 1995 Morgan.

Well, so i went to do my thing.

I thank you alot for all the tips, specially meguiars, you truly care about your users here on the forum!

The paint was very dull. the mission was to make the car look better, not the best, it was going for sale. So didnt have to make everything perfect, phew.

Of course i forgott my best camera at home, so i only had my iphone to take pics with. sorry!

I only had my 105/205 combo with me and i started out with polishing pad and 205 with my DA. and it corrected some, but not enough for me. So i tried the 105, but with gentle pressure and was allways turning down the speed at the final pass and no pressure, that corrected alot more defects and gave me the result i wanted!

In some areas the paint was very dry as you mentioned and the 105 just got stuck and hard to remove, but i had some OEM final inspection to help clean that off easily.

i must say 105 and 205 are my favorite products, i have the 80/83/85 also, but i hardly never use them anymore. im very curious about the new microfiber system hope i can order them from a dealer in europe soon.

          Well, here are some pics.
Youve seen the first post with the dull pics, so here are some results. Not the best pics i know, blame the iphone

          Headlight Before

          Headlight After

The owner didnt ask for a sealant so i just topped it off with a final wipe with the meg ultimate quick vax, also a favorite product to bring that last depth of color to it.

the air vents on the hood i hand polished and then i ran the DA along the side to clean up some drag marks from the intensiv bak and forth motion across the vents.

Alot of energy was given to clean up the owners intensive use of some green vax kinda thing as we all now of, the turtle.. they had smeared it into every little hole they could find, so my toothbrush and i spend at least 1,5 hours just cleaning of that stuff from the nuts and bolts and small areas were it had got stuck.

The overall impression was an improvment from maybe 2-3/10 to a 7-8/10.
Due to time limit 9 hours i could have done more if i had more time, im very happy with the results and the owner was very impressed!

I wont forget to try the 83 next time i do one of theese babies. they are fantastic cars!

Just another pic of another car, brand new, were in town for a few days before it was shipped of for a TV recording, they asked me if i could pop the paint and protect it, so i put M21 on it and then topped of with ultimate quickvax. look at this beauty! Morgan Super sport MY11.

          Thanx again for all !!

Good to hear it all worked out well for you, Eric, even with M105 giving some difficulties on the dry paint.

                Great work, Eric.

Morgans are really pretty cars but you must like their style. I do.

I worked on some super dry paint couple days ago and after M105 test spot I decided to go with just M205. It came out pretty good.
