  • HELP for SCRATCHED cultured marble SINK?

Wanted to get some thoughts before I experiment:

My wife used to mix henna hair dye in our cultured marble bathroom sink with a metal fork.....with a metal fork...a flippin' metal fork.
Now the lower part of the curved sink has hundreds of deep reddish scratches. [can feel with finger nail].

Am afraid using an aggressive product and a machine will mess it up because the pad pressure won't be even due the variable curve near the sides/bottom of the sink.

Then I saw a post about polishing a stainless steel sink with a power ball. Sounds good, but so did mixing henna in a sink with a fork.

Thanks for any advice. I always find help here and I always appreciate it.

I dont think you'll get scratches out of a rock with a paint cleaner....

Might have to call in the pros, maybe can re-finish it?

First thing that comes to mind is, LOTZA hand wet sanding!

But...maybe give one of the companies that manufacture the stuff a call and see what they have to say.

Let us know what you come up with, good luck.

Thanks, Bill. Worried about uneven pressure on the fingers, but, might spread the pressure by experimenting with Megs basic headlight kit (with the small pad for a drill).

I won't apply any pressure, just let the polish do the work and will report back if that works. Probably not aggressive enough, but I have some left over.

The key word here is "cultured" marble. This is not a stone surface, it is a plastic that looks somewhat like stone. It is a thin surface and pretty soft. You will see swirl marks all over it with good light. I have polished out some of these swirls by hand with #80 or #83. If you have scratches you can feel you will probably burn through to the wood core before you get them all out. But you won't know until you try.

            Good luck.

Sidebar: Are you meaning something like "Corian?' I was thinking along the lines of the newer quartz products like "Cambria."

              In otherwords, I'm confused (again).

              Sorry for the hijack.

I may be the one that is confused. After some further research. There is a cultured marble product that is solid. More like corian. The OP will need to look at the bottom of the sink and I think he can tell which product he has. Both look the same from the top. If it is the solid version you may be able polish most of the scratches out. With some serious work.

I color sanded mine (counters) with 600 to 1500 and then followed up with a bufffer and 3m rubbing compound. Then a polish like #80 or 205. It came out looking brand new. The sinks were cracked so I cut them out and used a drop in sink. That was a big job.

Well, It's looks like I have a place to start. Just going to play with it, [hopefully] without making it worse. Dropping in new sinks must have been a bear. I am definitely not ready for that.
                      Thank you.
