  • Anyone with a Select Comfort Sleep Number bed?

Does anyone have a Select Comfort Sleep Number bed? My fiance' and I are seriously considering one, but would like to hear what others have to say about it.

I recently had this discussion wtih my chiropractor. When he travels to various functions, seminars, etc., he spends his time checking out mattresses in the hotels he stays at. He said a large majority of higher end hotels actually use a simple high-density piece of foam for a mattress.

Costs are significantly less than a regular spring mattress, and last about as long. He says that regardless of the warranty of the manufacturer (usually a limited warranty), most mattresses of any type will last approximately 8 years.

As far as the Sleep Number system: I specifically asked about this mattress system and he said that most people he's talked with said that they liked it, but that it took them a month of playing with the controls to get a comformtable number. This equated to a month of irregular sleep.

If you are going to consider the high-density foam, my chiropractor suggested at least 6" thick. Take your pillow with you, and try a number of different densities. Most foam dealers do not specialize in 'mattress' foam, but foam for any and all purposes (couch cushions, car seat foam, etc.). Also, plan on keeping your box spring (bottom mattress) of your current bed, then laying a piece of plywood or OSB over the box spring, to match the size of your mattress.

My wife and I purchased two pieces of HD foam from a regular mattress dealer who wanted to get rid of these last two 4" queen-size pieces. He inherited them from another dealer he bought out. Paid $50 each, which is even cheaper than normal for foam. A normal queen-size 6" HD foam mattress should range from $350-400.

We purchased a 16" hypo-allergenic mattress bag from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. The 9" was too constricting on the foam and made the resulting mattress extremely stiff. We then used our 2" Tempur-Pedic-style matress pad from Costco over that, and then covered everything with an elastic wrap-around cotton mattress pad.

My wife suffers from all sorts of back, neck, and headache problems from a back injury in elementary school. She's never slept better. Even though I do not suffer from any major chiropractic issues, I must say that I sleep more soundly and toss and turn much less than I used to.

I know this was much more than you were asking for, but I hope it helps!

My parents bought one a couple months ago due to my dad's back pains on and off. There deffinitely was a couple of weeks there that it seemed he had to play with the controls to find the best setting. He deffinitely complains less now, but it's not the cure all that they advertise it to be.

Thanks guys. Fortunately, I do not suffer from much back back (although I think my nearly 20 year mattress/box springs are causing some rather poor sleep), but my fiance does complain of some back pain. I think her dad has similiar pains, and they both believe it is because of "weak" back muscles. I'm hoping this will help her with her discomfort. I think the main reason we are considering this bed is because I tend to like a firmer mattress, while she likes a softer one. With the Select Comfort bed, we adjust our sides indepently, and be comfortable. Anyone else have any experience with this bed?

We've had one now for about 5 years. My wife has a lot of back pain. I had to give up the full wave water bed because of it.

The sleep comfort is nice. Being able to have each person adjust to their comfort level is a nice feature as what one person likes may be different from the next.

If you have a box spring that in decent shape you can save yourself a ton of money by getting just the mattress. Thats what we did and it works fine. They will try to talk you into their box spring but it makes no difference....

Well, we ordered a king size Series 5000 last night. It's supposed to be delivered within two weeks, so I'll try to report back once I have it set up and try it out. It better be the best bed ever for as much as it cost!!
