Trillians latest version is a HUGE improvement over past releases, especially that it now keeps track of emails! You should check it out.

The only issue I've had with Trillian is in trying to send a file to someone not using Trillian.

Also, I find more functionality with all three programs, rather than just with one single program. The skins are fun, though!

This has been resolved with 3 Pro.

Trillian is a fully featured, stand-alone, skinnable chat client that supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, and IRC. It provides capabilities not possible with original network clients, while supporting standard features such as audio chat, file transfers, group chats, chat rooms, buddy icons, multiple simultaneous connections to the same network, server-side contact importing, typing notification, direct connection (AIM), proxy support, encrypted messaging (AIM/ICQ), SMS support, and privacy settings.

Without stealing your home page and with no other included software, pop-ups, or spyware, Trillian provides unique functionality such as contact message history, a powerful skinning language, tabbed messaging, global status changes (set all networks away at once), Instant Lookup (automatic Wikipedia integration), contact alerts, an advanced automation system to trigger events based on anything happening in the client, docking, hundreds of emoticons, emotisounds, shell extensions for file transfers, and systray notifications.

                I still say use Gaim.

It is free, Open Source, GNU...

You can get it for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux... and all the other Linux/BSD OS's.

It supports just about every protocol too!

                AIM/ICQ
Gadu-Gadu (Never Heard of it or used it)
GroupWise (Novell eMail use this at work, but use their messenger)
                IRC
Jabber (Just recently begun using Jabber even setup a Jabber Server. Google Talk uses Jabber Protocol)
                MSN
Napster (Didn't know their was a Napster Chat Protocol, but there apparently is one)
SILC (Never heard of it or used it)
                and
                Yahoo

Gaim stores all the messages locally, allows you to appear away, login to multiple protocols/accounts at once, has idel maker, transparencies... does a lot of stuff.

Did I mention it is always up to date and maintained?
