Which GPS? Tom Tom or Garmin? Please HELP!!

So I want a GPS for Black Friday. My limit is $150. Radio Shack has two models im looking at.

The Tom Tom XXL 550T $99 or the Garmin 1450T $149. The Garmin looks a lot better but not for $50 worth of looks. lol. Please help me decide. Which is a "better" unit...just between these two please

If I'm not mistaken, that Tom Tom XXL550T has lifetime traffic updates in which I would pass and get one with Lifetime Map Updates (look for this in choosing any GPS) which are suppose to be done four times a year to keep your GPS up to date.

lifetime map updates are not avaiable in a 5 inch gps under $150...i dont believe. thats why im deciding between these two...

My vote is for the Garmin 1450T, since that is the model I have. Very nice gps. The lane assist on the highway is nice among other features. I'm not familiar with the Tomtom's to give a recommendation.

I work retail and have sold both versions. The Garmin is the choice I would make. More dependable, better features, and ease of use is better than TomTom. Returns are a concern with TomTom.

yea. I recently found out that CUSTOM POI's on the new TomTom software can not be accessed Therefor I rulled out the Tom Tom. I am now between the Garmin or the Magellan 1700 HUGE 7" roadmate...no custom POI but it does have the option for a back up camera which seems really nice? Now between the two?

I would do a search for reviews on both units and see what people that own them are saying. I have a Garmin and I'm very happy with it. I would get the unit that has the most accurate map, the most POIs, and the easiest to use. A lot of GPS units have features that most people won't use (so why pay for them?).

I have the Magellan Maestro 4350 and love it. I have never had a problem with it in the 2 years that I have had it.

I was reading some reviews on both and the Garmin seems to be the way to go. Most people said the Magellan unit is SO big that it doesn't fit well and blocks the view out of most vehicles windscreens. CNET said this:

Like the big trucks it is suited to, the 1700 also seems better suited to the open road and rural areas, as complex freeway interchanges and tall buildings seem to confuse the device's accuracy at times.

I have a Garmin 1450. It has a nice big display. The graphics seem better than the Tom Tom but Garmin routing does not seem to be that good but have not used TT to see comparable routing. It was not very stable for a while but they came out with a firmware update (ended up wiping out my custom POI) but seems to be improved in not locking up,etc.

TomTom is just as nice, but it doesn't matter what hardware you have unless you spend the money on the costly subscriptions and map updates. That way you get the most with your money. Construction, Taffic, Accidents, etc
