Want to know if any one has used Northern Lab's products?

They sell it under the names "Kit" and "Formula 1".

I was specifically wondering about their carnauba wax. Just want to know if any one has had any good results? With what Meg's product would you compare it with?

Its because a certain autoparts store has it on sale until next week for $3, and seem tempted to try it out

Have you ever heard the saying, "you get what you pay for".

No, I have not tried NL products. I think the market value for say, 16oz of a quality wax would be in the neighborhood of $12 and up. It may look alright, but how long will it hold up in the hot summer sun?

I generally agree with the saying "you get what you pay for". However, I also work about 1/2 mile from Northern Labs, and know people that have worked and do work there. I believe they even produce some products for Meguiars. The thing to remember is that included in pricing, is marketing costs. So - somebody like Meguiars that has great products, also has a lot of marketing expenses (including the cost of managing this online forum). Northern Labs - and specifically Kit or Formula 1 brands, have virtually no marketing costs, and can sell their products much cheaper.

So - if cost is an issue, I would have no problems trying Kit or Formula 1. Even if you have to apply it twice as many times, it is still pretty reasonable. It probably doesn't smell as good as meguiars though....

        Thanks Shack,

For your input on the topic. I think it is interesting if Northern Labs, whether past or current produced any products for Meg's.

Meguiar's develops and produces its own products with its own world-class chemists. It certainly has not ever used products from brands such as Northern Labs (Which I have never heard of) and badged them as their own.

If you are seeking information about NL products I would suggest asking the company itself, or trying other forums not sponsored by a manufacturer. You aren't likely to find many answers about that brand on a forum dedicated mostly to Meguiar's products

I only posted the topic because other users have used other companies products before. In addition some have posted as to whether they liked it or not. For example, I've seen topics about Turtle Wax, 3M, etc.

I was just trying to get honest feedback, that's all

I know, no harm no foul. I'm not saying you aren't allowed to ask, just simply suggesting that you aren't going to have much luck here looking for info about an obscure brand.

Most Meguiar's users are more than pleased with their products, and as a result, often stay within the brand for the most part.

This probably won't help much. But I do remember my Dad using this stuff when I was a kid(a long time ago). I know I have seen it in stores also. If you go to their website there is a contact us tab.

I recall using these products in the 70's....Kit was a fairly popular wax!

Re: Want to know if any one has used Northern Lab's products?

There are companies whose business model revolves around manufacturing products for a variety of customers. This is true in the automotive world where a company may make suspension parts for Ford, GM and Chrysler (the folks who make the magnetorheological shock absorbers for Ferrari also make them for the Corvette ZR1, for example), and also in the pet food industry where the cost of equipment needed to produce the food is prohibitive for smaller companies (ie, not Purina!). If you have a dog or cat at home you may remember the pet food recall of a few years ago that covered many different brands. All of these brands used the same company to manufacture for them - to their specific formulations and using their particular raw ingredients.

It should not, then, come as a surprise that to some extent this "contract manufacturing" exists in the world of chemical production as well. It is entirely possible that one of these facilities could be blending a "recipe" using inexpensive ingredients for Company A who specs that, but also blending a "recipe" for Company B using only extremely high quality ingredients, or higher concentrations, or whatever. One is still a premium brand while the other is, um, not. But the raw materials are blended by the same place.

Now, who does what for whom (including for Meguiar's) is proprietary information. But let us reiterate here: Meguiar's develops all of our own products in house by our own chemists (they all work downstairs from where I'm sitting right now). We don't buy formulations from anyone else and repackage them as our own. Things like towels and pads, of course, are manufactured for us to our exact specifications. But any and all liquid, paste, spray, lotion, gel, etc (ie, chemical) products come straight out of the heads of a select group of individuals here at Meguiar's HQ in Irvine, CA. Every single one of them.

Now, as for the OP's original question about whether or not anyone here as ever tried Northern Lab's products, we'd like to know as well. We know that there are a lot of excellent products on the market other than Meguiar's product line, and we're happy to have those products discussed here. Heck, look at the number of LC pad users here! Whether you like or dislike a competing product, we like to hear about it. But one thing we won't tolerate is bashing of a competitors product.

I have seen Kit liquid wax for sale at Big Lots. I've never used it.
