  • Putting my car away for the winter!!

I know its bad to think about winter already, but I know I will be alot happier when the snow comes, knowing my car will be in the garage!

I went out and found a real nice daily driver tonight. Nothing real fancy but good enough for cheap transportation in the winter..

The questions I have for you guys,

    1. I am in need of a car cover for the good car. It will be parked in a shed. It gets real dusty inside. It is a gravel floor.

    2. What does everyone do to get car ready for winter storage.

I plan on getting some paint touched up on it before the snow comes. I got some rock chips and other issues i am fixing. So it should be freshly waxed when I put it away.

For the engine part of the car, Unplug the battery, bump the tire pressure up? ...............

    Looking for some feedback..

    Thanks

    Add a fuel stabilizer.....

I think some might suggest putting the car on jacks to avoid flat-spotting the tires.....

Put battery on a trickle charger?

I had to leave my car for nine months. Terrible, terrible decision.
You need to be the only person tending to it. If anybody says they can take care of it, it's a lie. I'm sure you would rather be disappointed and mad at yourself a friend or family member.

        • Change the oil.
        • Add a fuel stabilizer.
        • If there is power in the shed, use a battery tender keep the battery healthy.
        • Put down several layers of visquene on the floor to keep moisture from rising and causing rust.
        • Just about any car cover will do if the car will not be outdoors.
        • Run your tire pressure up a few pounds or put the car on blocks or jackstands.
        • Rodent proof the vehicle. Stuff aluminum foil in the air intake and exhaust. Also buy several boxes of rat poison and place it around the shed but take care that no pets or kids will be able to get at it.
        • Contact your insurance agent and ask about reducing the coverage as the car will be in storage and not on the road.
        • If you are around, unplug the air intake and exhaust and start the car every few weeks and let it warm up. If it is an automatic shift it into drive to circulate the transmission fluid. Do the same for reverse as well. Exercise the windows, blowers and don't forget the AC and the electronics.

Re: Putting my car away for the winter!!

You're in SD. It's never too early to think about winter. You'll go from summer's triple digits to winter's single digits and snow pretty quickly.

I think the advice you've got already is pretty good. Ideally you'd be able to put the car on jackstands for the winter to avoid flatspotting the tires - especially if they are a soft performance tire. Upping the pressure would be my second choice.

          Other items I'd add:
Check / top off all fluids
          Fill gas tank
Check coolant / antifreeze mixture for correct protection if shed isn't heated.

No mention of the type of car but I'd look for forums for that kind of car and see what they suggest.

Man, Some of those on that link are really good but Im not sure I belieave all of them??

It says not to remove the final layer of wax.. Really?

How often do you guys start it up during the winter. It does have a block heater. Should that be wise to use before starting it?

Keeping the leather moist is gonna be a big one to watch!

              Any other information is welcoem!!
