  • Manufacturer Agreement to Never Polish/Wax?

    I just found this on worldcarfans.com ...

"Customers wanting to buy the BMW M3 in Frozen Gray matte exterior paint are being forced to sign a statement that the automaker is not liable for damage to the car's paint. Refusing to sign the paper could result in the sale being cancelled.

Treatment of the car's specialized paint means the owners must never polish or wax the vehicle, or enter an automatic car wash that uses hot wax. A high pressure rinse is also required before hitting the auto wash. The car must be treated with kid gloves by the owner, who must remove excrement (huh?), fuel, insects, oil, sap and tar immediately with a sponge, while taking care not to rub the paint too hard.

Repairs may only be completed by a BMW-certified body shop. Any damage to the paint caused by nature, poor mechanics, bad or incomplete home care, or negligent behavior will not be covered by the vehicle warranty."

Obviously not the choice of paint for me...

I saw a story about that paint yesterday. I heard the color is something like a $9500 option. Can't see how that would be practical for anything but a garage queen that never sees the road.

I guess if you're prepared to sign the agreement then you're acknowledging it's your impractical choice and not the manufacturers.

Paying extra for it? I wouldn't, but then I am sure some people will...

A BMW M3 is no slouch and is a car really designed to be driven. Not sure how practical it is on a car like this imo...

They are just covering their behinds. I don't see what the problem is. You know someone will order that paint, not want to follow the proper care instructions for the special type of paint and then try and get something out of BMW when they mess it up. I say kudos to BMW for making people prepare to be responsible for their own actions.

That's just the nature of a matte surface. It's not my paint of choice either; I think everybody else on this forum will agree.
I'm guessing it's such a pricey option because no other BMWs are being painted that color.

I would like to see how differently these special M3s are treated in the assembly plant.

I wrote an article about that on LeftLaneNews.com Pretty funny stuff... they charge an extra $10,000 for the paint job, and then they take the warranty away too

Why should the manufacturer be liable for negligent behavior.

Hmm, maybe because they tell you you can't wax it, they are forcing you to be negligent?

With that type of paint, waxing is the negligent behavior.

Very cool. I see they list foils too, which brings the Euro Focus RS500 to mind.

I can't wait until this whole flat paint scene is over with. It very rarely looks good.

Matte or Satin Finish Paint - do not polish or wet-sand a matte clear, as the flattening agents that cause the matte appearance (textured finish) by diffuse 30 degree reflection are retained very close to the clear coat surface.

By levelling the surface the light will be reflected evenly and result in a ‘shine’. Use a rotary polisher and an ultra soft, zero abrasive cut (Lake County CCS Concourse Gold (100 PPI) foam pad) with a mild chemical paint cleaner (Zaino Z-AIO - All in One) it will remove surface marring and leave it satin matte. Use a clear polymer (Zaino Z-CS - Clear Seal) the key is to add surface protection and depth without adding gloss.

Swisswax - Opaque Wax- a premium wax specially developed for all satin matt paintwork types. It offers your car's paintwork thorough long term protection against all kinds of negative contaminants without damaging its satin matt appearance (too soon to discuss durabilty TBA)

I guess to each his own, but it isn't something I would choose. The paint, I mean. I like the car.
