  • Rug Doctor for home carpets

    Hi guys,

I am planning on renting a Rug Dr. from Home Depot and clean our bedrooms' carpets. The cleaning solution they sell is expensive. I already have both APC and APC+. I was wondering if anyone has used APC or APC+ with a Rug Dr. and gotten good results. What dilution ratio did you use?

I just bought a replacement steam cleaner (terrible name just for marketing) and cleaned a few rooms using the regular cleaner for the machine. I noticed a few spots that I should have pre-treated and scrubbed when I read this post. I don't know why I did not remember I could have used APC. I mixed up some 10:1 and put it in the cleaner reservoir of the machine. I also broke out my 7:1 spray bottle. I pre-treated the stained areas with 7:1 and used the brush built into the machine. It did a fantastic job! So those are my recommended solutions. You could probably even use 12:1 in the machine itself and pre-treat with the 7:1. One thing I'd recommend is going back over the carpet with plain water in order to remove some of the APC that will be left behind. This is what I did with the brush and I was pulling up foam (APC) after 3-4 passes with just water. That is why I think 12:1 would work just as well. You might even want to mist the carpet with 10:1, wait 10 minutes and then come back with the machine and just water.

If I'm not mistaken, APC+ was formulated to not foam as much as APC, and is intended to be used with machines such as steam cleaners.

It sounds like APC+ would be a better choice since it does not foam as much. I probably should test a small area with 10:1 or 12:1 and see how it works with the Rug Dr.
Anybody else has any experience with Rug Dr and APC+?

As mentioned, I've also read that APC+ does not foam and makes it easier to remove. But I had no problem with this and APC. It foamed slightly when being sucked up in the nozzle but for me, this was better. I could then see that it was still removing chemical. When I was spraying with water and it stopped foaming I knew I had removed most of the APC.

Glad it worked for you. But like the others have stated, apc+ is less foaming.

Rug Doctor and APC+ will be fine. I never use the Rug Doctor chemicals, but have used many Rug Doctors over the years.

I have not used the Rug Doctor chemicals either. Last time I rented one, I bought the Home Depot brand chemicals. ZEP, I think. Cheaper and it worked good. This time, since I already have APC+, I thought I can use that and save some money. I will test a small area first.

I would also be more interested in using APC+ inside the Rug Doctor or any generic steam cleaner, if anyone can provide additional information.

I'd rather not have to follow over with water though. We have a standard steam cleaner by Hoover where you fill one tank with the water/cleaner mixture and then use it like a regular vacuum while pulling the trigger.

Perhaps I'll take the hit for the team and order some APC+ to try in it.
