  • VW Phaeton/drive experience

Until last Tuesday I had never seen one and actually had never even heard of it although I have seen its cousin the Audi A8. This is a very understated car I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to drive a fully loaded phaeton from Los Angeles to San Francisco. All I can say is this is one awesome 4 door sedan ! I don’t really know all the specs on the car but for a big 4 door sedan this thing has got some get up and go, shifts are very smooth as is the ride. It has adjustable suspension and a host of other goodies, stereo is nice and the ride is very very good!

On our way to San Fran we went up the coat highway, all I can say is if you have never done this drive you should make time to give it a go, its absolutely BEAUTIFULL ! I have done this drive a few times before but this was the best trip up the coast yet. The phaeton made the drive incredible, I was lucky enough to have 2 other individuals with me also driving phaetons….here is where the fun began.

On our drive the weather had been off an on and parts of the road had been damaged which worked in our favor because there was almost nobody on the road. All I say is for a big 4 door luxury car this thing handles great !! I wish I had some video of the 2 of us playing on the tight twisty road. We came around one bend where there were a couple sightseers that must have been watching us come because as we rounded their corner they were jumping up and down and cheering for us…wow that was a blast.

I clicked some pictures as best I could of the coast as we were driving to Carmel. I know they aren’t great but you will get the picture of how beautiful it was on this trip. There are also a couple pix of the car.

If you are in the market for a 4 door family car that is capable of have a screaming fun time do yourself a favor and check out the phaeton.

Here are some more pix, sorry for the quality but that was the best I could do while driving :-)

Darn you Brian, That's one of my favorite drives. I especially like the area from Half Moon Bay to Big Sur. US1 is great around Santa Barbara and Malibu too. This reminds me that I need to make some reservations for the 29th annual Monterey Wine Festival which will be held the end of April. I'll fly into SFO and drive down to Monterey just so I'll get to take that route.

I did have a great time!

I couldnt believe how pretty it was this time of year. We had expected it to be rainy and ugly but the weather held up so we could enjoy the scenery and the drive. This is one of my favorite drives. I am going to have to take the mini up this road one day, I bet that would be fun too !

In thought the pics were pretty good, especially for ones taken from a moving car. Great scenery and great car too! Were you driving the V-12 version?

I wish it was the v12, there was one in the fleet but I didnt get to drive it.

Some of those pictures were so random I was unsure what they would even be of since I was pointing the camera out the window without actually looking at the screen.

It was 10 time better than the pictures show.

This was taken out the window of my car just south of Monterey a year ago. The Pacific coast is really stunning.

Nice shot ! I wish I would have been able to pull over and get some shots like that. Mine were taken on the fly at 60mph or so.

Any idea as to what the sticker price on the car is? I know the V-12 will put a nice hole in anybody's bank account but I'm sure they're all in the same range...haha as of now my Jetta is enough for me.

$96,000 MSRP base price for the V-12! Not sure what MSRP is for the V-8. This is Mercedes territory! Cool car though and it's great you got to drive it! I wouldn't mind owning one, even if it was "just" the V8 model. That's lottery territory for me though.

any of them are lottery teritory for me...lol I looked at the pricing and they are right around $65K the audi a8 is right about the same price. I didnt even look at the v12.

If I were to buy a car in this class i would look at the previous BMW 540, I really like those cars and that body style.

Wow, that's a huge price difference between the V8 and the V12!
They must figure that once you get over $65K, what's another $30K?

I am not sure what the sticker is but that is what they are priced at on carsdirect.com I still wouldnt buy one for that price. Great car but too pricy for me.

Sounds like you had fun driving up the coast. Owners of the Phaeton on the Vortex refer to the car as being stealth wealth. The car was designed and engineered to meet a long list of requirments made by the former director of VW.

Did you detail the Phaeton? How the paint, fit and finish and material quality as compared to other luxury cars?

                              RamAirV1,
Mercedes terrority is exactly the target market for the Phaeton. VW is or maybe was trying to move up market as is evident with vehicles like the Phaeton, Toureag and Passat W8. The grown-up VW's. I always have seen VW as a bean and frank company not a caviar and Champenge company. The people normally eat beans and franks.
