  • Need Advice. Looking for a Practice Hood

So I'm looking to go get a beat up hood to practice on with my new rotary. What is a fair price for a hood that would be scratched up and have some dents here and there?

I called ecology auto parts and they said 48 for a truck hood and 36 for a car hood, and the condition doesn't matter.

What other junk yards are there in the SoCal area that I could check out to try to find a cheaper deal?

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.

    Hi Andrew,

If you use this database http://www.car-part.com/ and sort by distance, you will find the used car part dealers near you.

You might try craigslist and search on "hood" under auto parts. That is how I located mine.

      Andrew...
You may want to try and talk to the junk yard owner/operator and see if you can "borrow" one for practice. "rthario" (Bob) and I went to the junk yard and explained to them what we were doing with the lids. The owner asked if we had a detailing business, of which we reponded yes and he asked for a business card. When Bob presented his card, the guy said, "take it and have a good day...I'll call you if I ever need a detail". We left with one hood that day, worked it and actually returned it to the yard all polished up and looking 90% better than what we left with. That began a "relationship" which over the next couple of months allowed us to take and practice on several more hoods/lids and return them to the yard all spiffed up.
We all benefitted from this opportunity...us being able to practice our rotary skills and them by getting a far better looking product than what left the yard. Anyway, just something to possibly consider.

Thanks for the advice guys and girls!

gto don, I really like your idea, but one thing I want to try on the hood is to see how far I can push the rotary before actually burning through the paint. I don't know if they want a shiny hood back with some burn marks in it...

Talk to a few body shops and see if you can dig through their scrap pile. Anytime a Hood is kinked or bent it is scrap. Ask them when their scrap Guy comes and go there the day before. Keep the relationship up and you will have access to fresh parts with different condition paint and different colors! I found a few hoods with a small kink in it that is perfect for practice.

Hmm, since you are in SC there are plenty of dealerships around. Just go and ask them if you can have a dented hood or trunk. I was able to get one for free locally at my body shop by simply asking
