Hey everyone,
Just looking for some input on a possible future cargo carrier purchase. I'm trying to decide between a roof top hard plastic carrier, roof top bag, or a hitch mount cargo carrier. I don't want to shell out hundreds either, as it will only be used a couple times a year. I'm going to keep my eye out at yard sales also, to see if I can get something used.
With 2 large dogs that travel in crates in the back of my Tahoe, that doesn't leave a whole bunch of room for their training equipment, supplies and luggage when I go on vacation or to K-9 seminars with them. I went to North Carolina last year for a seminar and ended up with the truck absolutely shoe-horned full of stuff on my way home, so much so that I couldn't see out the rear view mirror. Anywho, I was thinking on getting some kind of cargo carrier, but I'm not sure what type.
I've basically ruled out a hitch mounted carrier due to the fact that when loaded, there's no way to open the back hatch to let the dogs out while enroute to wherever I'm going. They do sell swing away type hitch mounted carriers, but they cost upwards of $300, and the enclosed swing away types are upwards of $600. The swing away type would be more convenient, simply because it would be very easy access and I could load it and unload it myself.
A hard plastic roof top seems like it would work ok, but I think it would be difficult to install, load and unload. It would just be me on these trips and the Tahoe stands over 6 feet high so I need to do all this myself. I could throw in a small step ladder in the truck, but that would kind of defeat the purpose
I also like the idea of it being able to lock. They are a bit on the expensive side, but tolerable at $200.
A roof top bag is another option, however I've read some horror stories of them being difficult to load, if they aren't loaded full they can flap in the wind and tear. With the truck being so tall, I can see it being difficult for me to load by myself. Even the waterproof bags seem like a nice, cost-effective option.
Soooo, I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has used any of the above cargo carriers and what your experience was with them, good or bad. Give me the pros and cons and help me with my decision please!
Thanks a bunch!
