  • Need opinions on color choices

hey guys, i have finally bought a new drivers door for my VW GTI, i have narrowed down the colors to 3 different ones. i would paint the GTI black but it won't look good. The body even with body work would still not be great lol. I am open to color suggestions and opinions on the colors ive found. im painting the car next month

The Riviera Blue looks good to me. Different, but a great shade of blue.

I am thinking that the other 2 colors would bring you extra scrutiny from the Law. They would bring attention to your car even when standing still. lol

Thanks J.A. Michaels, Thats what i was told about the orange from my friends and they would also call it a rolling skittle if painted that orange lol.

here is current pics of my MK1 GTI

My original door, it was badley tweaked and wavey from being hit

My new door off a donor MK1 rabbit from pick and pull and also you can see why i want to paint it, it was poorly taken care of exterior wise, the paint has CC failure all over it

Good luck with the paint job. I am sure it will look great when finished.

That orange wouldn't suit too many cars, but I think your Golf might be one of them IMO.

I just noticed you're 19. Now is the time to be cruising around in loud cars...

          Go the orange!

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

I actually might do both colors lol, I might do a Gulf paint scheme like the old 917's? i saw one other Mk1 with that and it was cool, but i called my paint shop and they wanted to charge me a extra 300 dollars for a stripe off set on the drivers side. Hopefully it will look good, the body is pretty wavey from being thin metal and is almost 30 years old lol.

You are reminding me of younger days. The car I had when I got married was a Gulf Orange 1976 Honda Civic hatchback with a white hockey stick style side stripe and a sunroof.

You've got a MkI GTI that needs a repaint? Geez, leave it factory silver - it's a great color on that car, and an original factory color as well. Those cars are darn near collectible now (not quite, but close - have you checked prices on original, unmolested versions?). If it were mine, I'd leave it as close to original as possible.

I know, but the silver it has i polished out one area on the right front fender that had good paint just a little sun damaged and its just not enough depth in the paint for me, silver is just a little bland for this kind of car, i do agree though leaving it stock im not touching anything else on it, its already been messed with lol, had a VR6 turbo in it at one time i was told by one owner i know. has a built racing short geared tranny and i mean short geard lol, disc brake conversion and a bunch of other goodies. oh and i can't really repaint it that silver because of its bc/cc finish it wil cost a extra 100 dollars to put that kind of coat on the car.

If it ain't right (body work), paint it white.

Out of those, go with the blue. Someone around my area has one painted orange similar to Gulf Orange, and it's ugly IMO.

if i got it painted any orange im worried if it would be too much, only a few cars can pull it off being orange lol. i looked up some pics of stock original 83 silver and they are too flat they look like a flat paint job, here is a link to a nice stock 83 GTI in silver

I like definitely like the blue out of those choices. Trying to picture it on that car, I think it would look nice if they did a good job with the paint and with it all buffed and shiny.

Re: Need opinions on color choices

Of the three choices you provided, I would personally go with Riviera Blue. Honestly, though, in my opinion, you want a color that either compliments or contrasts with the signature dark red stripe that is present in front of the car (and all GTIs), and Riviera Blue is a bit too bright to do that. You want a dark color to supplement it.

Have you been to VW's website lately? Go to the GTI section and use the Builder tool. Most of their color options available are dark, with the exception of red and white (backing up Golden's claim "If it ain't right (body work), paint it white"). But I think each one works well with the rest of the colors of the car - and especially with the stripe. So I think if you go with blue, consider a dark blue like the Shadow Blue Metallic on the builder. It's what I would pick.

I see what your saying, only thing i am worried about by painting it a darker color it may make the car look smaller than it really is? i am on VWOC forum have been talking to them about everything about these GTI's im new to them and they complicated to work on, they are wiring nightmares lol. i was looking at the VW site too and i lost internet, im going to go back on it today after work. ill look into that blue though sounds good.
