  • Engine start up procedure after 3 years in storage

The title says it all. I'm about to purchase a 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS that has been stored for a little over 3 years. What do I need to do to avoid any unnecessary damage at start up? After start up? Thanks!

If it was me, I would do an oil and filter change. I would drain the fuel and replace with fresh fuel. Charge or replace the battery. It wouldn't hurt to prime the system, either. That way you're not doing a dry start after all those years.

After 12 hours, all the oil is in the pan anyway. Pull the fuel pump fuse, and crank it a few times to pump the oil.

Thanks guys! Any other ideas? How do I dispose of the 20+ gallons of old fuel?

Eh, that's a good one. I have no idea. I've never had that much fuel to deal with. What would you drain it into? A bunch of 5 gallon buckets? Good luck.

We have government run ecocenters where I live. They take stuff like this for free. We also have privately run hazardous materials companies. They cater to businesses and charge. If I recall correctly the privately run companies will accept product from home owners without charge (nobody knows about them).

20 gallons is just too much to try to get rid of on your own. I can't think of an practical home remedies that make sense or are environmentally friendly.
