I dont think you went to far. I know people that do that all the time. When they are traveling long distances to a show or somewhere they cover their entire front end like that to prevent rock rock chips and bug guts from damaging the finish.

I cant find the oringal thread anymore but years agp there were these two guys that taped up an entire Audi S4 and drove it cross country. They are extreme.

Any problems with the adhesive being baked on the paint when sitting in the sun for days at a time when doing this?

That's exactly the purpose of thread where I found these pics ( 3M blue painters tape ), but I thought it would make for a lighthearted thread on a detailing forum where we're used to seeing panel edges taped for polishing purposes.

Hehehe, naw I tape off all my customers cars like that too, buff THROUGH the tape. That's the trick.

Just Curious, how much time did that consume?

Ha, we do this all the time when we travel long distances for shows. However our tape job isn't nearly as nice as that Honda's:

Gotta admit the two-tone look with the black rear and sky blue nose doesn't look that bad. *blush*

Nawww. For that, you have to use Scotch tape!
