I was talking to a potential client last night about my processes and the work I would be doing to her car when she told me that she had been to another detailer to obtain a quote as well. She had mentioned to this other shop that she had heard good things about me and was going to schedule a consultation with me. She then proceeded to tell me that the other guy instantly started bashing on me. Said that i did schotty work and didn't know what I was doing and that all the cars that I had done had marks all over the paint and just looked absolutley horrible. Normally a competitor bashing on me wouldn't bother me but this particular guy contacted me last year and wanted me to come and work for him because he had seen my work and was very impressed. The funny thing is that I have actually corrected 2 cars that he had done. I guess I am just kinda shocked because this guy is a fairly large operation and I am just a small shop that operates as a side business. No threat to him what so ever.

Let your work speak for itself. Let his do the same. That will sort things out.

I have never and never will talk down about a competitor. I feel that makes him look inferior for sinking to that level. Luckily i still had some pictures on my camera to show the potential client some of my work.

Boy, why am I not surprised to hear that!! I guess it only goes to show who is the "professional" in this situation. If it were me talking to this potential client after that company bashed my business to her, I would have said to her, "I'm sorry they feel that way about me, but I can refer you to other satisfied customers who can speak of my work". Further, if it were me getting a quote from that business, and they hammered someone else in front of me, it would have immediately turned me away from them. If a company has to slam another to obtain business, I figure they do it more because they have something to hide or know their quality of work doesn't match that of another. If that's what it takes to get business (IMO), I would not even think twice about leaving and NOT coming back.
Good luck to you!! I hope you ended up with her as a customer.Don

Only sad thing would be if his BS lost you a customer.... but if I were in that lady's shoes, not only would my feet hurt (), but I'd be turned off by having someone openly bash a competitor of theirs to me in the way you describe.

The way I see it there are enough vehicles out there to keep us all busy and no need to bash on each other to get business. Just very frustrating to hear that people are doing it.

Very well said. I couldn't agree more.

Re: Kinda shocked at some people
It looks like things worked out in my favor on this one. I got a call from the client today and she has decided to have me to her car. She said even though I was more costly than the other shop she felt like she was getting more and thought that I was very informative on the processes and proper procedures.

Had I been a potential customer of his and heard him say that I would have definitely walked away. How one handles them professionally plays into their work in my opinion.
Good job on taking the high road and congrats on the customer. Looks like she knew the game this other guy was playing too!
