I work on North Island Naval Air Station in Coronado, CA, which makes for an interesting work environment. Part of my daily commute involves crossing the Air Station's aviation maintenance apron, which often involves yielding to such cross traffic as taxiing F/A 18 fighters among other naval aircraft.
Today we got a new tenant. The USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) is the latest carrier to home berth in San Diego. We're already home to the USS Nimitz, the USS Ronald Reagan, and the USS Abraham Lincoln. BTW, the CVN designation, as it was explained to me, stands for Carrier (C) Fixed Wing (V) Nuclear (N). The 'V' designating "fixed wing" is a visual representation of a swept-back, Delta wing shape common to jet fighters.
Most military bases are like small cities, but the perspective of seeing this hulking carrier berthed off the east shore of North Island is still a startling sight to see.

Look closely at this last photo, and you will see the ship's crew standing in parade formation
