ADS raising prices just to discount them?

So, Friday I was looking at buying the Meg's pro sampler kit ADS offers. I even printed off the website listing to compare prices. It was advertised at $100.00 for the sample kit.

I just looked at it, and the price has RISEN to $125.95 but then advertises that it's the weekly special and is 25% off, basically bringing it back down to $100...

So, is he trying to pull the wool over our eyes by raising his price just to pretend like we're getting a good deal??

Doubt it. Rick's a good guy with a sterling reputation on MOL. The $125 is likely the retail value and the $100 may be his regular selling price, but its still a pretty good bargain no matter how he presents it. Especially considering that Rick is one of the few retailers who offers sampler packages anyway.

Besides, we can't expect ADS to operate below cost, or it would tank in a hurry and we would be left without a great distributor resource. Can't kill the goose to get the proverbial golden egg.

I've noticed similar changes in prices, but this happens at many online stores. Can't say I agree with it, but then again I'm not so upset that I want to open my own online store.

Said it before, ADS isn't the cheapest site on the web, but it is very well stocked, and that the added product costs have to be covered in the margins somehow. I've shopped with Rick in the past and he does provide a good service, although at a slightly higher price point than other sites. Not really his fault, I'm sure sites like Amazon have better buying power than smaller resellers. Typically you'll get a better deal when ordering 1000 cases as opposed to 10 cases.

Outside of guys who do this for a living, car care products are discretionary income purchases. If the value doesn't meet or exceed your expectations, hold out for a better deal or find other methods to obtain the items for your ideal price.

Maybe he had to raise prices for reasons not in his control, and to help US, the buyers, he shot out a 25% discount? I dunno...I noticed the same thing, but I don't like playing the blame game.

I'll be sending out my order with him sometime this week!

Prices might be higher, but I'm sure no one can beat his service. I couldn't be happier with my purchase from his because of his service and fast shipping.

Hey Guys,

Rick des have a stellar reutation on MOL and many other forums. His service and fast shipping are awesome. There could be many factors why prices could have gone up. One of them being the economy. I will say this he stands behind what he sells and is certainly one of the good guys.

I sincerely doubt that Rick is trying to pull a fast one. His reputation is is stellar, he always backs what he sells. He is a good guy. A pleasure to do business with.

What usually happens with his sales is if the item is normally sale priced (he shows that in the listing) he puts it back to normal price for the 25% off sales.

To clarify, suppose he has a regular price of $10 on an item but usually sells it for $9 sale price. If he puts it on a 25% off special, he takes the 25% off the $10, not the $9.

As far as the Sampler Kit is concerned, it did used to be $100. What he may have in mind is that when this sampler sale is over, his regular sale price will still be somewhat discounted from the $125 normal price of the item. He may even kick it back to $100, I don't know, or he may be permanently raising the price.

I'm not bashing ADS, I've bought from him before and probably will again..

As far as the Sampler Kit is concerned, it did used to be $100. This is the only reason I'm questioning what he did, it just seems wrong in my opinion. He took something he normally charges $100 for, raised the price to $125, and then made it a "weekly special 25% off", only dropping it back down to $100. Not very "special" of a price if you ask me since that what he was charging the day before. But, I'm sure you guys are right.. he might need to increase his prices for some reason or another. But, if he drops his regular price back down to $100 after his "weekly special" on it is over, I'd have to view that, IMHO as completey dishonest.

Hey guys, how about instead of just speculating here in an open forum you shoot an email to Rick and ask him? A debate can go on for days with all sorts of theories being tossed around, but only one guy can explain in detail what's what.

We would hate to see this turn into something negative for a place that has been a long standing dealer of Meguiar's products, and a very highly regarded dealer at that.

Good idea. I emailed Rick, he said $125 is the normal retail price and the $100 price was a 'running sale' price. After the weekely 25% off sale, it will go back up to the regular $125. I guess I was just confused, because the website never listed the price as a sale price like most of his other items will clearly show a regular price and a sale price. And it's been $100, IIR, since I joined MOL back in November.

FYI, I just figured out how much the items in the Sampler Kit would cost if you were to buy them individually, and it comes out to right around $135. So even at $125, you're still saving money. And that was figuring the items at sale price, not at regular price. Just for anybody who's interested.
