  • Out of the frying pan and into the fire. A car guy's nightmare hat trick

This happened this morning. I enter the freeway (I-5 southbound in San Diego) and I get caught behind a gravel truck. Enough to make any car guy with a freshly polished vehicle nervous, right? Traffic is flying by in the passing lane, and I hang back as much as possible without becoming an unsafe traffic hazard. I see my shot and slip into the next lane.

I look forward only to see I am now trailing a CEMENT MIXER. And the mixer is predictably churning. Again I start glancing at my rear view, waiting for traffic to clear so I can shoot into the next lane. Tiny pebbles are bouncing, but I deftly manage to evade them. I see a clearing and slip into to the #1 lane.

Only to look up and see that I was now behind a small pickup hauling a heated tar trailer!!! And that little wagon was smoking and bouncing!

Were the detailing gods bored this morning?

I feel your frustration. It really makes me angry when gravel trucks have a load in the back but don't use the pull back tarp to cover it. I don't think they understand sometimes that if a larger rock comes off of their vehicle and not just the road IT IS their responsibility. Same thing goes for ice and hard packed snow on vehicles' roofs.

I'll add to this. In addition to the above, the one of the more recent things I can think of are flatbed pickup trucks with OPEN bags of Ready-Mix Cement stuff on the bed. So, everything that is in one of those little cement bags, went flying all over my car for a couple of miles since all we have are two-lane roads around here. Joy.

I know the feeling. Makes you cringe. I remember when I was living up north. Getting stuck behind a plow truck. Not only was he plowing, (this part was great). He was spreading road salt from the back end. What a mess.
