  • OK, I confess, I am not OCD!

I don't really know how to take care of my landscape or my house. I just never really learned how, not the way I am learning how to detail a car. For detailing, I know what products to use, how to use them, the tools to use and how to use them, the systems for putting all these together to do a task, and I am comfortable there.

I moved to Colorado by myself when I was 18, went into the full time work world, gradually worked my way through college and launched into a full time career in the field of software engineering that lasted really until 2001, when I made a career turn that kept me working at home but for a fraction of what I made before. All that time, I made good money, but there was always pressure, there was always overtime, and it left me exhausted.

It wasn't that I didn't admire beautifully kept houses, beautifully decorated houses, beautifully designed and kept landscapes. I didn't have the energy to do it myself and I didn't make enough to pay the various specialists to do it for me.

So now I feel confident if I see a car that needs to be detailed, I am confident I could do the job and make the owner very happy.

And I confess, part of what I wanted to do was learn how to detail my house! And in fact, I have found tools, products, and processes that have allowed me to do things I never would have thought possible.

So I know it is easy to wonder how someone can own an expensive car or a show car and yet not properly detail it or remove the swirls. But it is easy for me to understand, because before I found MOL, I had no idea how either.

And still, I am hoping some OCD in the car department will carry over into my home and my yard in time, but for now, having a small piece of my world that I feel empowered to accomplish to make it look nice is a step in the right direction.

There are tons of things you can use around the house. Using the D-Line glass cleaner on windows with quality microfiber towels will leave them nice and clean around the house!

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

        I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
        Remove swirls my friends.

If everbody whom owned an expensive car performed all detailing duties, then all the detailers here, & other sites would be in the unemployment line.

Wow, thanks for all your suggestions! I'm going to save these all to try them.

One that I found on my microwave, stove, and dishwasher was, in addition to the plastic windows, some of the shiny plastic parts are actually laminated clear plastic on regular plastic, and PlastX works to clean them, but test on a small area to make sure, because it won't work just on shiny plastic.

And then the other black matte plastic areas, you can use a plastic and vinyl dressing like Hyper Dressing or Natural Shine. Between those, my old kitchen appliances look brand new!

Sounds familiar. With the exception of the working at home part, I did the exact same thing, and for much the same reasons - which is how I came to work here at Meguiar's.

Yard work is not really my thing (I actually detest it, truth be told!) but I have used a variety of car detailing products around the house - from Quik Out on the carpets (we have two small dogs and QO is just amazing!) to M105 on the rotary to buff out the stainless hood on the BBQ out back (which needs to be done again....) to some M80 by hand on the dining room table. Yep, M80 on the oak furniture. Hey, Meguiar's started out as a furniture care company back in 1901 (not a lot of cars on the road back then...... not a lot of "roads" either!) and a lot of the old furniture formulations carried over nicely to automotive finishes back in the day. Most cars back then had a lot of wood on them and furniture cleaners/polishes worked great. Even painted surfaces weren't all that different from most furniture finishes, too. M80 was a natural, and it worked great!

Michael, it is funny you mentioned M80 for the wood furniture, because after seeing what ScratchX original formula did as a cleaner/polisher for my guitars, I was wondering how M80 would work on other wood. I have one coming from Amazon in a day or two! We have a lot of darker stained wood trim in our house, including a lot of wainscotting panels in the great room. Kind of old fashioned, but it is one of the things that attracted me to the house.

As far as lawn or gardening is concerned, I just seem to have a black thumb for growing things. I kill anything I touch. One thing I remember, though, from ages ago when I was buying products from a Shaklee distributor, the concentrated all-purpose cleaner that they sell, they actually advertise it at a very low concentration to water your lawn because the surfactants helped let the water into the soil.

A quote from a web page I found on the Shaklee Basic H: "Multiple uses- great and economical as a window cleaner, grease remover, fertilizer for lawns gardens household plants"

Anyway, who knows if highly diluted Meguiars cleaners or car wash soaps might do the same.... at least, it is one reason to wash the car on your lawn, keep the soap out of the storm drains and make your grass grow better

Well I do not know the chemical breakdown. But I can attest to this. The subdivision were we just moved into. Brand new, still building it out.

We all have young trees and bushes. Since we moved in, I have been emptying my wash and rinse buckets in these areas. All the neighbors want to know, why all of our plants are so healthy looking. What is your secret. lol.

Re: OK, I confess, I am not OCD!

                          Marcki-

My wife been asking me to detail around the house lately, so as others have pointed out the skills and products are a natural transition. I had to treat the love seat like car upholstery a few weeks back (APC, hot, wate, scrub, vacuum) to clean up a nasty pet incident. A couple of spritzes of odor remover when I was done and we couldn't tell the cushion was almost ruined.

Just last night she asked me what I have in my arsenal that would deal with a different kind of pet problem.

As I have gotten older, I have found that letting my desire for knowledge replace my fear of failure and lack of confidence to have really made me a lot happier. For many years, I would say I wish I knew how to do things. Since I decided to stop wishing and start learning, I have learned to oil paint, learned karate, learned how to detail and several other things I wanted to be able to do. There are still somethings I won't do myself because I realize I lack the knowledge and tools to do it right, but under supervision of someone who knows what they're doing, I'd give it a shot

Keep your mind open, believe that you can and know when to ask for help and you'll be surprised what you can learn to do. Be warned though that might lead to OCD in many facets of your life

William, your words are inspiring. My whole life I have stressed over feeling like I didn't know how to clean a house and do a good job of it. I think it is time to move beyond that, apply the new skills that I have learned, use the new products and tools I have learned to use, and put a big effort into turning things around. It isn't too late to learn

Highly recommend QID for cleaning off electronic components.
Makes that receiver and blu-ray player look brand new.

And APC+ cleans stains out of carpet where Resolve doesnt.
