I have never been more excited for a motion picture event than this in my entire life. This is seriously going to be one of the greatest things ever created on film, if not the greatest.

I cannot wait to buy the Blu Ray!

I love how this and BoB are based on real events with real people, Its funny how we have and had so many brave American's that do these heroic things for our country yet we care more about what Tiger Woods has been doing.

The series follows the campaign careers of three real life Marines:

Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone GySgt Basilone was the original Rambo. His combat actions earned him the Medal of Honor and Navy Cross. He was the Marines Corps' answer to WWII Army hero Audie Murphy. (In San Diego, Basilone Road marks the northern boundary of one of the largest USMC bases in the country - Camp Pendleton).

Robert Leckie whose war memoirs, Helmet for My Pillow, helped form the script for the series.

              Cpl Eugene B. Sledge
who wrote the book With the Old Breed, which was also was used to create the script for The Pacific.

Thanks for sharing. I will be watching this with my wifes' Great Uncle in mind. He was a seabee on Guadalcanal.

I loved Band of Brothers and have the DVD set. I know the guys in the Pacific had a similar story. I had read the book about the Band of Brothers but the series expanded the narratives dramatically.

I was able to wait episodes 2 and 3 and I have been disappointed. I missed the first episode and it seems the episodes are shorter (only 50 mins) so much less story.

The Band of Brothers had an edgy constrasty dark look similar to the visual style as Saving Private Ryan. The Pacific has no special "color tone" so less grittiness. The Pacific only focuses on a few characters unlike a larger group (usually different each show) as done in Band of Brothers.

                        Oh well.

Re: Band of Brothers producers team up to present "The Pacific" on HBO this month.

I am a former Marine (86-89) and always had an interest in Marine Corps history. I own and have read numerous times the books written by some of the Marines portrayed in the Pacific.

In boot camp we learn who John Basilone is.

I am tickled to death to see on film what I have read and heard from the men that were there. So far it looks like they have allot of the little details right.

As mentioned before there does seem to be something missing though. I am not sure if is character development, story line or what.

Its different in a good way I think, a little slower pace than BOB was, but the fact that these are real events makes me cherish our Marines that much more, we owe a lot to our vets and current service members

I think Hanks and Speilberg wanted to make The Pacific very different from BoB, but I can see other mitigating factors as well. The European campaign was linear, with a set progression that made it easy for BoB viewers to follow. The Pacific Theater was a campaign of island hopping, so there is no obvious linear progression as we saw in BoB. The battlefields were all very different and the objectives often did not seem to have the cohesion of the European campaign.

I like the idea of following a few real life Marines as opposed to an entire company of troops. In BoB, it wasn't until the final few episodes that I was finally able to differentiate members of Easy Company as individual characters (I also had this problem in Generation Kill). It's been a lot easier in The Pacific to follow the three main characters of GySgt John Basilone, Robert Leckie, and Eugene Sledge.
