  • Need advice: should I become a Naval/Air force Officer in med corps?

I am a physical therapist with a post graduate doctorate. Recently I saw the movie hurt locker and was inspired to help my country when they need it the most. Currently I work in an outpatient orthopedic setting and work with pro athletes along with general pop. Pay is adequate, benefits are fair, but I have a lot of student loans and I cant afford to buy here in California. My girlfriend is looking to take a job in Minnesota or Florida and we could have a dual income of over 100K. I know the military will help pay my laons and put us up, as well as offer me an O-3 salary to start. I am 28 years old.

    My questions are:

    1) Is it worth it to be a military officer and work as a PT/ot/MD?
2)Air Force Vs Navy for best "lifestyle". Ive heard AF is a gentlemens club.
3)Which branch would I serve the men and woman best in?

    Thanks for your responses :-)

Well, one thing about the military is that all pay grades generally earn the same salary regardless of the job you do.

I don't know what the military does for loans you already have. I know they give you education benefits while you're in and/or after you get out, but doulbe check the policy on existing loan debt.

At the end of the day, you have to look at what's right for you and take the path you think will take you where you want to go.

        GO ARMY!!!

Pay grades are the same across the board regardless of MOS, job title, or branch.
Expect to make a bit less then your civilian counterparts, there are gratuitous amounts of "extras" on top of your base pay, depending on where your at and what you're doing.
Compared to the Navy and Air Force....they're both gentlemen's clubs...no offense to the sailors and airmen here!
Talk to your recruiter, I know there are some loan relief programs out there (don't know the specifics....especially the officer side).
If you want in the medical field, you better have a good head on your shoulders, depending on what you want to do it'll zap your emotions if your not expecting it. We're not talking about athletes with torn ligaments or grandma needing a new hip. You'll see troops as young as 17 or 18 coming in with multiple missing limbs, full thickness burns across the majority of their body, GSW's, fragmentation injuries, severe PTSD....and the list goes on.
Sorry I'm not trying to turn you off or bum you out on joining the service...we definitely need help. It's just I've seen so many folks join up claiming they did it for 9-11 or they joined up to get out of the house, college ride and so on and they couldn't take it, especially when I needed them the most (I'm definitely not implying anything on you, just what I've observed in the 13 years of service in line companies). Do it for the guy next to you and not the "lifestyle".

With that said I want to wish you the best of luck in pursuing a military career, don't know much about being an Officer. It truly is a fantastic voyage!

I just saw the Hurt Locker last week, IMO it's the most accurate movie on Iraq that I've seen, so much so that I had trouble getting to sleep!
For those who fought for it, freedom has a flavor the protected will never know.

            Go Air Force.

I was in the Army. As a medical officer in the Air Force you will most likely get better duty assignments. You will definitely will be treated with more respect in the Air Force. I love the Army. I would do it all over again in heart beat. But my honest advice for you in your situation, join the Air Force.

            Good Luck.

Air Force. My father retired after 28 years as a Lt. Col. He had always told my older brother and I if we wanted to join the military and wanted a family, go Air Force. It is the most family-friendly branch. Ask the people that have been in the other branches to be honest and most will tell you the Air Force is more family friendly.

I have a friend that went into the airforce as a medical officer and a cousin who was in the navy.

I think they both enjoyed their jobs and loved the good pay with alot more time off and alot less stress. They also enjoyed the loan repayment.

My cousin was a Navy doctor. He use to say that most doctors play golf on Wednesday, but he can play golf everyday.
