    Re: BEST computer protection?

I'm glad you added "opinion". Here is mine.... anything you can buy at the store is not the best.

Personally I highly recommend Prevx 3.0, downloadable over the Internet. I think it's about $35/year which is a little pricey but I'll tell you... it _works_.

I've worked on several computers including my own that have been infected by malware and I've tried Norton Corporate, Macfee and a few others and none of the others were able to remove most of the malware I've encountered. I've also seen Macfee block just about everything for no good reason. Prevx has been able to remove 100% of the malware I've seen infect a computer. In my case, this is about 20 different situations. This is installing the program _after_ the computer has been infected. I've seen it block hundreds of malware programs before they became a problem when Prevx was already running.

I also have AVG running as an anti-virus program but it seldom registers a problem. This might be because Prevx finds problems first, I'm not sure. I run Prevx mainly for malware, which is the biggest problem right now, and AVG for viruses. But Prevx will detect virus programs just fine on it's own. I'm of the school that its better to run two programs just in case. I'm also thinking about uninstalling AVG though as it's become boated and I don't think it's very good any longer.

If you don't go with Prevx and ever have a problem with malware, you can visit's Prevx's site and perform a free scan. It will tell you if it can solve the problem... and I'm betting it can.

As I mention, I recommend this program as I've seen first hand that it can repair problems when other "known" programs cannot.

If you want to get technical, your Anti Virus is your last line of defense against security holes.

That aside, working in IT as Technical Support I recommend anyone on Windows use Microsoft Security Essentials.

It's lightweight, doesn't take too much memory.

      It's simple, does the job.

Protects against malware and viruses without takign control of your computer.

I've never seen it conflict with any other program.

      And it's free*.

      * Unless your copy of Windows is pirated. That's their only condition is that you must have a genuine copy of Windows.

Have you ever heard of Kim Kommando? She hosts a computer radio program and she has "made" a security suite with free software downloads.. She's a fan of PC Tools and that's what I'm using. All free downloads, and it's worked perfect. Not a system resource hog, updates everyday.

A link to where it and others can be found.

Non-bloaded, free, well managed.... sorry... I thought you said this was a Windows product.

MSE has been in release state for 3 months now and went into beta 6 months ago.

            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microso...ity_Essentials

"During an on-demand scan, MSE beta found 89 percent of malware samples; but only 30 percent of commercial keyloggers. Those results were average, according to the editor. MSE found 67 percent of rootkits. The suite detected half of the editor's scareware samples. The suite's real-time protection found 83 percent of malware and blocked the majority of them. In this test, 40 percent of the commercial keyloggers were found. MSE found 78 percent of the rootkits. The editor expressed optimism MSE would improve during its beta testing period."

"In Tests PCMag.com Stated That Prevx 3.0 Detected More Threats Than Other
Products and Overall Scored Better Than Signature-Based Competition"

" 'Prevx detected 94 percent of the threats, more than any other product
              tested with this same collection'.
'In a parallel test using commercial keyloggers in place of actual
malware, Prevx detected 90 percent of the threats, the same as Webroot and
more than any other product. Prevx detected a larger percentage of malware
than any of the other products in this test and it tied with Webroot for best
              detection of keyloggers and rootkits.'

'While Prevx is quite good at detecting malware on an infested system,
it's even better at protecting a clean system. As in the removal test, Prevx
detected more malware than any of the competition--97 percent! And it was
quite effective at preventing installation of those threats, coming up with a
superb malware blocking score of 9.4 points.'"

I'm not trying to push this product upon anyone. I just know from my own experience that it's been the only software I've found to remove the malware I've seen on several systems. I've corrected theses systems and they have not be affected since running Prevx. It's only big problem.... its not a well known name ('cause it does not have any flashing box sitting in a store or is not installed for free on computers).

I've been having GREAT luck with Mac OS X for about 4 years now. Haven't had a problem
If a tree falls in the forest and there's nobody there to record the event, how can you be certain that there was a tree or even a forest to begin with?

I run Norton on all my computers and I have for at least 5 years. No complaints here, haven't noticed any bogging down or what not.

I haven't tried anything else so my opinion is very biased but also that means I haven't had a reason to try anything else

Well, that in itself is a tradeoff, certainly more obscure OSes have less KNOWN exploits. Certainly getting a new computer, re-learning a bunch of stuff and paying for the same software you already own for a new platform is a lot of hassle for the slight increase in security in OSX vs Windows. Any of the decent free packages (I like Avast) will keep you pretty safe. Nothing, not even OSX will keep you safe from downloading pirated software that has trojans.

This is true. Nothing can protect the user from themselves.

This is why I stated in my first post that security is the last line of defense.

I actually run without any anti virus for the past 5-7 years, and have never gotten a virus. I've recently added Microsoft Security Essentials to experiment with it before referring it to people, that's it.
