  • Awoke to a real-life nightmare this morning

Woke to the sound of large (F650) trucks and large equipment on my street. I peeked out the window, and I see a large dust cloud everywhere. I rush back inside and scramble to find my shoes, pants, glasses, and keys and go flying out the door. As I stumble down the driveway, I see this massive truck blowing ROCKS! out of the cracks in the street, with what must have been a 2 inch compressed air hose. These rocks were of all sizes up to 3 inches across. They had no regard for the parked cars whatsoever. They're quickly coming up behind where I'm parked. It seemed like I could not stick the key in and crank it fast enough. I just barely got out in time. Covered in dust, but luckily I escaped without any rock chips (that I've found yet). Then off the back end of the truck, they were laying down sealer-goo in all the cracks, to get ready for paving. No notice whatsoever. Now we have these rocks laying all over the street. This afternoon we'll probably get a street sweeper for a second coating of dust. Gotta keep an eye on your cars at all times it seems.

Anyone else had something like this happen?

I feel your pain. My truck has to be parked out on the street and i get it all. Street sweepers, garbage trucks, construction trucks, drunk drivers AND the recent key mark from some random person walking down the sidewalk.

There are many risks taken when parking on a street.

      Lord, I love my garage.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Had a similar thing happen. Had my wifes car sitting outside and the county came by to re-pave the road and blew oil all over her car.

A couple years back I was driving down I-75 in Florida trailing a large dump truck that was full of 2" river rock. I was about 5 car lengths back when he hit a bump and his tailgate dropped open spilling about 5 yards of rock. You should have seen those things bounce. There was nowhere to go and braking was really difficult but I was luckier than a couple who lost it and wound up in the ditch. I had just over 8 grand worth of damage to a 6 month old car. :cry

Stuff happens. The trucker had great insurance.

Wow, these stories are crazy. So hard to have anything nice.

And these days, I make a point of not following dump trucks or cement trucks of any sort. Even unfilled ones are still dirty, and shed dirt at every bump. The uncovered ones spewing dirt out the top just make me sick.

Too bad you didn't have a cam corder handy. Video record them and then sue them to fix the paint chips. (on your car and anyone elses)

Yeah, I love how they spray rocks out of the cracks right at the cars, and then blow the dust off the car so it's like nothing happened. Bottom line is unless your car is sitting in your garage (and sometimes not even then), all you can do is hope and cross your fingers for it's safety. It's a scary world beyond that driveway apron.
