  • School Project...

I figured MOL would be the best place to post for this ...

I have a chemistry project coming up soon and I decided to do it on the chemistry of car polishes and waxes. However I was wondering if you guys knew anywhere I could find information on the chemical makeup of these products. Any ideas? Thanks guys!

    think I smell a spy...
Sounds like a cool project. Will I mostly be on waxes and sealants?

Yeah, but after some research I'm thinking I'm going to have to broaden it to the chemistry of modern automotive paint and paint care products. There's nothing out there on the specific chemical make ups. Oh well...

Didn't think there would be much info out there, that information is kept on the down low.

When you finish, if you don't mind, I'd like to see it or at least some of the information as I'm curious myself about this! I just recently posted about how HowStuffWorks.com should have an article on how these work!

By the way, if you're curious about some of the ingredients of modern waxes, Zymol's site lists their ingredients.

Ryan Nailed it! That's all the information availiable to the general public, you aren't going to find anything more in depth. It may be enough info, but it all depends on how in depth your projects needs to be.

It is a great idea and I hope you get some great info on it!

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

                I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
                Remove swirls my friends.

Maybe throw in a bit about how long Meguiars has been around, furniture polishes, how long DAT has been around, etc.

                  just a thought.

Maybe if you concentrated on the History of Meguiars, how they evolved from a furniture polish, to were they are now. How the company has evolved along with the advances in modern paint. The emphasis on body shops to the introduction of the consumer line. Stuff like that. Hope this helps.

I found a lot of links on wax in general and can elaborate on the hydrocarbons that make up wax and the aluminum oxide used in M105 and M205, anyone know where I can find a detailed explanation of how polish works, beside the obvious?

I know, it *****! Another stumper is how wax bonds to the paint surface. Ive found out that wax is mainly composed of isoparaffinic hydrocarbons (Napthas) and that they form chain structures that protect the paint. But what I dont know is how they are attracted to the paints surface. Really, why hasnt any research been done on this topic? Its kind of sad but I do understand why its not published..

How do you know all of this just by reading the MSDS?
