  • Opinions?

Okay, I definitely need to get some work done on my car. I'm trying to put together a wish list of things to do. Most of this stuff is going to get done in spring or maybe piece by piece during the winter. I need you guys to help me figure out what I could/should skip, places to get the best prices and roughly how much things will cost.

    1. Paint. I was going to get the main problem areas color matched with some kind of laser pigment device they use. These "problem areas" are the hood, the nose and the passenger side quarter panel. The hood and quarter panel have been visibly repainted (badly); the nose has terrible rock chips and the hood has really bad alligatoring and hail damage. If I get it done this way it counts as "paint restoration" as opposed to a repaint in which case it still qualifies as original paint for car shows. The rest of SS paint is kind of dull (haven't tried the rotary on it yet) and has its fair share of scratches and dings.

I may just go ahead and repaint it all w/base coat - clear coat for better shine and no annoying oxidation. This may detract from the value of the car but then again it really isn't worth very much and I don't plan on selling it. I'm hesitant to do while I still occasionally park on the streets at night. Usually its in my backyard or driveway but when i have a brand spanking new perfect paint job I'm not going to want to risk it getting scratched/marred. I want to go with the same color and pin striping. I'm thinking a Maaco paint job with no buffing, I'll do that myself. I'll even spring for an extra coat or two of clear coat. How much should this cost? Any tips? Ideas?

    2. Steering wheel emblem. I can't seem to find the emblem that goes in the center of my steering wheel. I have the sport steering wheel package that came with the 1979 Calais and Hurst, it is missing the emblem and makes the interior look incomplete. No matter where I look no one has it, or even knows exactly which one it is. It features an Oldsmobile rocket.

    3. Visor. Both my visors are sun damaged and one is clearly hanging down. They are beginning to fall apart on only the outside part. The stitched vinyl edging is still in perfect condition. I asked the vinyl guy that did my landau top and he said he needed a special stitching machine to do that vinyl stitching. I either want to find replacement visors or find someone who can re-stitch them using the same kind of material of the exact same color re-using the original vinyl edging. Do you guys think this is possible? Any ideas where to look? What kind of costs am I looking at?

    4. Chrome. The chrome on my front and back bumpers both have some surface rust. They are two quarter sized ones on the front and a few tiny ones on the back. The metal is slightly pitted but really not too trashed. Are there any quick fixes like rust converter>chrome spray paint or would I really have to get it re-plated. I don't feel like getting it re-plated as they are no longer legally allowed to do it in the city limits and I don't want to pay to ship it away, wait to get it back and pay the shipping costs. The question is: do I really have to? Any recommendations on where to get it re-plated, if necessary?

    5. Trim. My exterior vinyl trim strips are kind of dull and the adhesives are beginning to lose their grip. I'm thinking of de-badge them all and re-attaching them, is it better to do this before the winter or after? Will the temperature affect the griping ability? It will be covered during the winter.

    6. Insulation for inside hood. The insulation stuff on the inside of my hood is all falling apart and horribly looking. It drops all kinds of debris on my engine and as a result it won't stay clean for longer than a day. I want to put a new layer on but of better quality this time as G-bodies are known for getting that alligator effect that mine has from the hot engine. Anyone know where I could get an extremely high quality one and about how much they go for?

Thanks for your time, I know its a lot to read. I just needed some advice from those more experienced than myself.

WOW! got a project going on. Try Year-One for parts... and salvage yards for other parts that can't be found. Can surely get visors recovered if can't find others. Trim should be able to be cleaned and reattached as long as it's cleaner/prepped very well. Alsa-corp makes a chrome spray paint system that you might be able to spot the chrome if you don't want to re-chrome. Hope that helps some.

I find that YearOne really only has repro or new parts. My local junk yard doesn't have anything for my exact model though I'm going to double check to see if they have any other G-bodies in with interchangeable parts.

I was thinking that I would remove all the trim and clean it with APC, then hit it with some M40 or Lab Sample P when it becomes available. Does that sound about right? Any tips for this kind of debadge?

Thanks I will look into that chrome spray. Anyone have any good experience with Maaco? I've heard horror stories but if I buy the premium package how bad will it really be?

For the steering wheel emblem, try this ebay listing. I'm not sure if it's the correct one or not, but you could try contacting the seller for more info.

As a matter of fact, just had my B5 sprayed by Maaco about 6 weeks ago. It looked good for about a week... when I washed it and the glaze they had put on was washed off to reveal a non-cleared area around the tag... took it back and looks great. So, I'd just check it 1st and look hard after washing to see if anything shows up. I got the top urethane job. What do you mean by debadge? Also have had great service and price from a Texas yard Auto All Imports 888-629-7194. May be of some help.

That is very similar, but the exact one. Good thing I have the original sales brochure for reference. Thanks for looking though. I try to check on ebay every now and then, I rarely find anything and if I do it is really, really expensive.

I'm starting to not have too much faith in Maaco. I want the best paint job necessary so I don't lose too much value. I'm thinking BC-CC. How much should I expect to pay, minimum, at your average body shop.

I was talking about the vinyl trim on the sides of my car. I will definitely call that place tomorrow. Do they only do imports or domestics as well?

I think part of the reason you have a hard time finding parts for your car is that there's just not that many of them out there. If I needed aftermarket parts for my car, I don't think I would have much trouble finding them. Of course, my car was also very popular during the 90's, so there's a lot of 'em floating around. Just keep looking, and I'm sure you'll find something. You might try asking at a GM dealer if they can point you to someplace that would have parts for your car. Other than that, I don't know what else to tell you, just keep searching the internet. Good luck!

The real problem is that my car has an exclusive trim. If I had the supreme finding parts would be worlds easier, but the Calais is just not very common.

Not sure if they have domestic parts as well... haven't had the cause to ask, but they have been very helpful and cost-saving for me; I know you're talking about the trim on the side of the car. By de-badge, do you mean taking chrome off trim... ?

Nope, I have these vinyl strips that are attached to the side of my vehicle with double sided automotive tape. Some of them are beginning to get loose so I figured that I might as well remove them all and re-attach them all with fresh tape. If I am going to get the car repainted, how ever, it maybe in my best interest to wait until it has been painted and the paint has cured.

Ya, man. Taking them off and cleaning... re-apply with new tape after paint has dried. Good job... I feel ya. Have done a lot of redoes along the way. Keep us posted.

I went to Maaco today. Get this: they want $2600 to paint my car with a basecoat-clearcoat, excluding wetsanding; that costs $1000 more. I lol'd.

That is steep; paid around $1300 for the urethane BC/CC in Florida... is their top of the line...?

That is their top of the line job, but come on, Maaco's top of the line isn't really "top of the line".
