  • EXCITED! 57 Chevy on the road soon.......

I burned out my clutch a few years ago. I purchased a new flywheel (old one was trash) and new clutch kit.

That was the easy part. Long story short my engine is a custom 383 externally balanced, yada, yada, yada.... took about a year or so (and 4 flywheels) to figure that out.

I finally have all the correct parts, I hope! I should have her on the road by tomorrow night.

That's a TINY transmission. I am surprised you managed to burn the clutch before exploding that tranny!!!

Yeah, externally balanced drivetrain is a PITA.

Well the rear end went first. Then the spring perches snapped. Then the drive shaft u-joints busted followed by the burning up the clutch and fly wheel. Trans is still holding up.

Looks like a Muncie M21 or M22. If so, they're not blow proof, but are pretty solid transmissions. They came standard on many GM muscle car combos with high horespower/torque. The Camaro, a 396/375, in my avatar came with an M21 close ratio.

                Looking good Joe...

Isn't old Detroit Iron fun and easy to work on? I'd even say relaxing to work on.

A big amen to that....you can actually see the engine, unlike most cars today.

is that a Muncie or a BW tranny? I can't tell from the pic?
Regardless, I sure hope it was a lot less of a PITA to get in and out than it is to get the Muncie in and out of my '65 Vette. I just had to change out the clutch, TO bearing, and pilot bushing last winter and that's a job I hope to never have to do again. On the older Vettes like mine the tranny xmember is not removable so wrestling the tranny in and out is NOT fun, especially doing it on your back with the car on jackstands rather than having a lift.
What am I, fly-paper for morons?

Joe, I'm assuming you didn't build the engine, but if you did, I've got to ask, why would you not opt to have it balanced internally??

I'm thinking Muncie; the BW had two bolts on either side of the top center of the side cover (total of nine), the Muncie had one (total of seven).

As I understand it to create a 383 you put 400 crank and rods in a 350 block. The 400 parts are externally balanced.

Well a month later and I just bolted the pressure plate in. It is balanced to my engine.

Now I need to find the time to put the trans in.
