  • Discount Tire Experience? I have one or two to share.

    Hey Guys,

Soo... I was just wondering you guys' experience with Discount Tire.
Mine isn't so great. I have given them chance after chance to get the job done right, and each time they screw it up to the point where I feel the need to share my experience to the community.

I will cut down my experience short: I essentially bought all my tires from Discount Tire.

    1) Last year, I bought a set of 245/45-18 tires for my G35 from them and had them installed at their Tulalip, WA. location. I watched with my own eyes severely scratch and gouged one of my $700 OEM wheels with a crow bar. The guy doing it was a beginner and when his colleagues heard a loud screeching metal sound, they ran toward the guy to stop him. There went my wheel. I repaired the gouges myself satisfactorily with some mismatched spray paint. A proper wheel repaint would run $150-175. To top it off, one set of adhesive wheel weights was not applied properly to factory specification. They were exactly 1" from the grooved location of the wheel. I sux0r3d it up anyway.

After six months, I brought the G35 with the same set of wheel/tire for their free wheel balance job (they offer free lifetime balance if you install tires there). This time I went to their Bellingham, WA location. Instead of properly removing the old weights and rebalance each wheel/tire, Discount Tire decided to add more weight to balance the wheel. I could never get a vibration free drive at the speed range between 60-70mph because of the poor balancing job. The wheel is about 90% balanced.

Soo. TODAY, after 1 year since I visited them, I decided to give them ONE MORE CHANCE to redeem themselves. This time, I requested that they REMOVE the old weights before recalibrating the wheel balance. I also asked them to repatch one of the tires that I temporarily repaired using a tire plug. This time, when they removed and reinstalled the tire, they scratched, yet again, my OEM Wheel! They fixed the tire injury, however. When I talked to them about the scratch, the manager was silent for a while. I knew he was not going to fix it for me. I could tell that business is tough for them. They are performing more free blancing services to customers than selling tires. So I said, it's okay... I'd just have it repainted when I get back to Canada. So I left. Also, this time they did NOT balance the wheel. They simply ADDED EVEN MORE weight to the wheel, instead of properly removing the old weights to recalibrate the wheels. I get LESS vibration between 60-70mph this time, but still not a vibration free ride. The wheels are NOT bent... perhaps it was just the cheap Falken tires I am using. Either way, they did not perform the job to my satisfaction and this is the second time they damaged the wheel on the G35!!!

Note that the tires on this car are extremely easy to install. They are the Falken 912 with a very flexible sidewall. The 245/45-18 tires are also not super low profile tires that require special skills or equipment to install correctly. Discount Tire has the Industry-Leading Hunter Tire Mounting and balancing machines that should be able to remove, install, and balance 18" wheels without a hassle.

    2) I also have an Infiniti M45. It also runs on 245/45-18 tires. Since this is my wife's go-to car, I use only the best tires on this car. I purchased a set of Bridgestone RE960 from Discount Tire two years and they costed me an arm and a leg. I thought I'd be nice and let Discount Tire do the installation as well. This time, I went to their Bellingham location to have the tires installed. To my surprise, they did NOT scratch my wheel.

Four months later, I bought a set of 17" Micheline winter tires from Discount Tire Bellingham location. I brought a set of 350Z wheels for them to mount on the 17" winter tires I purchased. Since I was there already I decided to let them rebalance the wheel on my M45 as well, since it's been over 6000miles since the wheels were last balanced. Due to some sort of miscommunication, the technicians mounted my 17" tires onto my 18" M45 wheel!!!! The result is that they severely chipped a lot of paint off one of my 18" wheels!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Regarding the 17" tires I bought and installed with them, they simply mounted the tires onto the wheels; they did NOT balance them. I had to shell out $30 to have those wheels balanced when I got back to Canada.

Without a doubt, Discount Tire, at least both their Bellingham and Tulalip locations, is incapable of performing jobs to the public. Behind their seemingly good public-relationist sales representative is a team of unqualified, undertrained tire installers. They have the best equipment available in the world. But they simply do not know how to use them.

Bottome line is... be cautious if you decide to have Discount Tire install tires on your precious wheels. They are perfectly fine to purchase tires from, but neither their locations in Northern Washington are capable of performing simple tire mount/balance.

I have saved around $250 at most from them. The damage incurred from using their service is over $450. Since I am a perfectionist, I will have the wheels professionally repaired by a reputable machine shop this coming winter.

I feel that I must share this information to the community. This is not intended to bash Discount Tire. None of this is Discount Tire's fault... perhaps damaging customers wheels is the practice of the industry??? I guess I should be responsible for having them perform installation/balance on my wheels in the first place. Please, think twice before having them work on your car. Or else, you are going to feel very guilty for letting them do any sort of work with your wheels and tires. I feel kinda nauseous and queasy right now for having let them literally destroy my wheels three times in a row.

Re: Discount Tire Experience? I have one or two to share.

Are you speaking of the Purple color Discount Tire, or the Red and White color Discount Tire (they are not the same company).

I've become convinced that someday when I have enough space and money, I need to have my own tire mounter/balancer setup.

A couple months ago I spent two days detailing my Ranger, and just as I finished I discovered a gash in a tire. So, I went to the red and white America's Tire/Discount Tire for a new set of tires (it was about time anyway). They were very prompt and quick with the service, but I found the quality lacking.

Their employees clearly do not know how to properly use a torque wrench (or they just don't care). They go down on it so quickly and pull back so quickly that the lug nut might as well have been put on with any old wrench. Who knows what torque it's at. Mine were all different when I checked after, some not tight enough. And good thing their jack handles are cushioned, they nearly set my truck down on top of it! I quickly ran over to make sure they didn't try to put the spare tire back in, what a nightmare that would have been. Anyway, after they were done, my truck is finally done and on the ground and I'm breathing a sigh of relief for a moment.

Then the guy (kid really) says "and we shined your tires for you sir" and I immediately start thinking "oh gawd." I look at it, and there is this gooey white/blue substance of who-knows-what running and dripping ALL over the tires and the wheels. The wheels were SPOTLESS before I went in there. They used so much of that junk that it flung onto the body when I drove. I had to spend a full hour cleaning the wheels and re-dressing the tires properly later that day.

Later on, I noticed there are wheel weights on the outside of the wheel on one side of the vehicle, but not on the other. Huh? It doesn't vibrate at all though, so I'm not taking it back.

And then a few weeks later I went to check the pressure, and I discover they used a different kind of valve stem on each side of the truck! (or they just didn't replace one side). My pressure gauge doesn't work on two of them.

Anyhow, I won't be going back. I rotate my own tires. And if I need new ones or a repair at some point, who knows. I'll have to figure it out then. '

It seems places these days are going more after volume than quality.

If anyone ever scratched or damaged my wheel beyond something that could easily be buffed out by hand, I'd request they purchase me a new one.

Yup, I am talking about the Red/white Color Discount Tire.

In the case that the tire/wheel combination is naturaly harmonic, little to NO balancing weight is required. Perhaps that is why you have balancing weight on one side of the wheel and not the other.
Eventually, as the tire starts to rotate (a fraction of an inch) around the wheel, wears out, and naturally deforms from wear and tear, weights may be added or removed to keep the wheel and tire balanced. No worries in your case, seriously!

It's when they mess up your wheel (or the underside of your car) that you should be worrying!

Trainee with a crow bar? Oh dear. OEM alloys are pricey, but you can't argue with the quality.

I'm lucky. I have a good guy about half a mile from me,with proper tire changing facilities. he's very carefull and does a good job.

I am lucky, my daughter's friends work at a nearby Discount Tire and the kid that does my work is a perfectionist.

Just a note guys, let's not turn this into a bash session, ok? It's one thing for the_invisible to document a problem (or series of them, in this unfortunate case) but there is quite a difference between that and bashing. It's far too easy for these threads to turn sour - let's not allow that to happen.

No problems here, but a guy in a local car club that I am part of is a Manager at Belle Tire. I go to him for tires now. Saves me some money, too!

                  thanks for sharing guys.

anyway, a nice fellow PM'd me and suggested that I call their regional office to let them know about the issue. They asked for my information and told me that they'd call me back. Honestly, I don't think they would bother calling me back. Why would they?

                  Be cautious, guys!

I only dealt with the online company and they were great. A local company promised me my stainless braided lines in less than a week and 3 weeks later finally told me they were baackordered. I called Discount Tire on Friday afternoon, they were at my front door Monday when I got home from work. I would definatly use them again!!

YUP! I also purchased a set of momo wheels with winter tires pre-installed from Discount Tire Direct (their online division). NO scratch or poor workmanship of any kind!!!

Again, I am not telling people to avoid Discount Tire completely. If you could get tires at a GREAT price from them, then purchase the tires from them. Otherwise, avoid their installation and services. Discount Tire has a lot of customers who do not care about their wheels being scratched, chipped, or damaged. They will not lose much business just because some car enthusiasts choose to avoid their services.

I've had no experience with them.....

One of my Sergeants uses Tire Rack and have a local Walmart install them for 10 bucks a pop with free rotation/balance.....

I use our local Les Schwab, they have treated me quite well over the course of 5-6 cars and several sets of tires.

Interesting. I think I am due for tires maybe next spring or summer and was thinking about giving DT a try. I currently go to Sam's Club and after magically having one of my little black lug nut covers go missing each time and a mark being put in one of my rims, I am also looking around for a tire place.

Just wish sometimes people cared about our/their cars as much as we do.

I've had nothing but good experiences with the local (red/white) Discount Tire in Regency area of Jacksonville. They always get it done quickly, are courteous, and I've never seen any damage they've caused to my truck (and I would have noticed it, unless it was a scratch on the side of my truck bed...there's too many there from the previous owner to even count them!). I've always paid the extra $10 per tire for the insurance, and I've had to use that insurance probably 2-3 times now, and it's no hassle at all..each time they've replaced the tire and never put up a stink about it at all. I guess like any other place, it depends on the employees at the individual one you go to.
