  • Having transmission problems. Who can help?

I have a '94 Cadillac Fleetwood with the 5.7L LT1 V8 engine and 4L60E automatic transmission. The car has 150k miles and I just purchased the vehicle a couple of months back. I was told by the previous owner that the transmission had recently been rebuilt. I took the car to two smog checks where it failed twice. I suspect a bad EGR valve, cat. converter or O2 sensors might be the cause so I'm going to have those replaced soon. Well the day before the transmission problems started occurring I had been driving without a gas cap, which I lost at a gas station and since been replaced and I also degrease the engine. I let the engine cool down and later sprayed down the engine with the degrease and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then I sprayed it down with cool water, I saw some smoke coming out from what it seems to be engine or transmission but didn't think much of it as it later went away.

Well the next day I felt the engine jerk whenever I hit 25mph, after the 25mph mark the car ran smootly but whenever I decelerated and again hit 25mph the engine jerked. I also got the service engine soon and traction control lights on. I checked the transmission fluid and the level was fine so I read the codes which gave me a throttle position sensor error which I later had replaced. That didn't help as the car won't go over 25mph on @ (Automatic Overdrive) or D or 3 (Third Gear) anymore. The transmission fluid has also turned brown with a mix of black (which may mean the dipstick is just dirty?) I was told by the owner this might have been caused at the smog check as the mechanic might had forgotten to turn off the traction control causing the transmission to burn fluid.

The thing is that I can drive fine and smooth when driving on 2 (Second Gear.) What should I do? Thank you.

My tranny guy in SoCal is one of the best but he really only does race transmissions. But after being in the business for over 30 years he can probably tell you where to go for reliable service. He might take as a job, you won't know unless you talk to him.

Shoot me an e-mail and I'll give you his name an phone number.

You an also find him on CraigsList by searching for Sniff Transmissions

He built-up my 700R4 and installed a shift kit for my 1975 Jimmy with a brand new 454 BBC

My 4l60e lost 3rd and 4th gear. I bought a new rebuild from finish line transmission in IL.
If its fast, loud, and runs on a flammable liquid...count me in.

The last part about the previous owner telling you the traction control did that is ridiculous, because traction control is not controlled by the transmission (to my knowledge anyways). Also, why and only why would a smog check cause that problem and not driving it around with the traction control on? It sounds like the previous owner, just from everything I've seen here about the car, didn't do everything they say they did. Just too much going on with the car for it to have been fine just before you bought it. If the check engine light is on, there may be a transmission code. If the light is on for the transmission, the transmission is in "safe" or "limp home" mode, so it will most likely only have one working forward gear and speed will be limited. It is hard to say for sure the fluid is bad simply by the color. Does it smell burned? Sometimes a fluid change can fix problems.

Is there a transmission error code?

There is no error code. I haven't been able to take in to have the fluid changed yet will have that on Monday, perhaps. I heard that a flush may do more damage than good so I will have it drained and have the filter and possibly the pan replaced. I will also have the mechanic check the hoses and fuse. I don't have the time or money to have the transmission replaced or rebuild and this is my only car.

The flush can do harm in the sense that if the transmission has not been properly cared for, it can unclog dirt that may be plugging up a hole and cause it to leak or, the "damage" part, flush the dirt/debris/junk and cause it to clog up a line or something causing failure. Either way, the flush itself isn't what's bad. I still won't ever do a flush with a machine, aka, having a shop do it. I flushed my transmission on my Neon myself when I had to fix it. Thinking about changing the fluid and filter once more now that it has had time to cycle many thousands of miles and trapped some more junk in the then-new filter. The old filter was black, ick.
