  • Goodyear TripleTreads or Michelin Hydroedge

Need some new tires for a car im giving to my sister who is a new driver, wet traction and emergency maneuverability are a big priority. I have a set of dedicated snow tires, so winter traction isn't that big of a deal.
I have driven a car with the Goodyears and they seem great. Has anyone used both of these tires that can offer a direct comparison?

A 30 second search on the Internet seems to favor the Michelin tires by a large margin. I have no personal experience with either model.

Id like to add another player: Nokian H's
Christian, could you please post some links? I looked on google, from my research they look almost dead even. Goodyears have the edge in the snow, they Hydros have an edge in the rain.

What kind of car is this going on? I had Nokian i3's on my Prius but those are dedicated summer tires that are lighter than stock for increased MPG.

I would look into the Nokian WRG2 if you can get them. Those tires are amazing in all weather and increase fuel mileage in the dry.

One thing I'd recommend is taking the rating and review information at Tire Rack with a grain of salt. I has _the_ worst tires on my truck made by Perrelli and they were rated very high at TR. TR requires no commitment (registration, confirmation, etc) from the people that post reviews so there is no accountability for this information. Also, someone's 5 rating might be another person's 8 rating. Your better off reading information from sites were people register and post messages often.

(BTW - These Perrelli tires...frts were had about 2000 miles on them and the rears had about 15000 miles on them. 65mph on the highway and they hydroplaned on a little slush. In snow you could just about push the truck by hand the traction was so bad. I'd stop and the truck was start sliding down the road on a hill.

Eh.... well, turns out I found the warning flag by searching for TripleTreads rather than Triple Treads (with the space between the words) and I also use Scroogle rather than Google to eliminate all the paid for links served up when using Google directly.

To be fair, it's only one link and a limited number of complainants (there was another link on that site but it referred to an issue of not being able to get *fresh* tires in a purchase.... apparently the person was sold 1 set that was almost 2 years old and the replacement set was over 2 years old, new tires but made several years ago, never a good thing.... if one pays the full price, one deserves fresh tires as the rubber does deteriorate, even if stored properly.

But, the complaints showed up as the third and forth link in my search, something that did not occur with the Michelin search and thus my "jump to conclusion, without the real facts" attitude.

That said, while I've not owned a set of Hakkapellita...... err.... Nokian tires in 30+ years, even back when I lived in Norway, most people there shunned anything else for adverse condition driving. I'll be picking up a set of Nokians this year for my new car seeing I own it rather than lease this time around and know I'll be keeping it long enough to wear out 2 sets of tires.

Funny though.... I've had plenty of car tires that weren't much to write home about under winter conditions but I've never had a set of tires, be they Firestone, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Dunlop, Kumho or Michelin that were less than great in wet weather driving.

Re: Goodyear TripleTreads or Michelin Hydroedge

I put a set of Hydroedge on my wife's Honda Civic. At the time they were 'rated' for 90k miles, I haven't looked at what they are rated at now. Anyway, we had the car for about 45k miles after that. They were great in wet and snow. My only complaint was they were loud. May have been a harder rubber compound to get 90k out of them. If I were choosing between Goodyear and Michelin, I will go to Michelin 100% of the time.

I personally Love Bridgestone Potenza performance tires on my Lexus.
