  • A weekend in Richmond

My Marine son flew into Richmond this past weekend, and we drove up and spent a couple of days with him. It was great. We stayed at the Omni and dined at two very nice restaurants. We also also toured the Confederacy Museum and walked through the Executive Mansion. Richmond is a charming city. I'd like to go back.

I am very proud of my son and daughter. Here are a few photos:

Wow, that *is* something to be proud of akimel.

Great family you have there. You should be proud.

Edit: I need to get up to Richmond myself one day, the furthest north I have ever been in VA is Dublin.

Cool! Glad to hear you had fun. Wouldn't mind traveling to Richmond sometime. Lots of history, I'm sure. There was a battle fought here locally during the Civil War, known as the Battle of Fort Sanders. There are some markers in downtown Knoxville commemorating the event. The University of Tennessee was used as a hospital during that battle. Tennessee was lucky during the Civil War though - since it was occupied by Union troops for most of the Civil War, it was spared much of the damage that the rest of the South incurred.

I had always wondered why NC had few Civil War battles. Just recently, I found out the western part of the state was basically pro-Union back then, and even some of the folks went up north to fight for the Union!

When Sherman marched through NC on his way to Washington, DC, he did little damage to the state because of pro-Union folks.

And a bit of trivia here: Ever wonder why so many blacks live in DC? It was because their slave ancestors followed General Sherman on his way back to the capital.

Forgive me if I am getting off topic here.

Must be proud to have a son like that, I know they sure don't let just ANYONE fly a plane.

Im curious, why did he fly in with a Skyhawk? Seems a bit outdated for the US to have that plane anymore.
          Quick transportation I assume?
