Re: How fast are you browsing?

Between here and NY, I'm getting 7748kbps download and an artificial 1272kbps upload. Artificial as in it's hard limited to that speed after going over a certain amount of data in a burst (It's specific to my DSL provider). It's done to keep a check on filesharing. For regular surfing one rarely uploads very much so in that case my pipe is as wide open as for my downloads.... as I watched the speedo climb at the start of the upload portion it usually gets up over 1500 and then sharply cuts to 1272 and stays there without wavering.

The really annoying bit is that I know my DSL line could handle much more data as our cable television also runs across the same phone line and the DSL modem is part of the TV box. We can have 3 different channels going on three different televisions + make full use out of our DSL connection for data AND have a conversation on the phone at the same time. Things would change if I wanted HD programing, then I'd need a seperate phone line and TV box for each TV if I have. Unfortunatly, I have yet to see the need HD programing.... The news is just as depressing in HD, the weather predictions are no more accurate and seeing all those extra blemishes and flaws in my favorite actress's face is nothing but a let down...

          Regards

          Christian

I must be bored if I do the same test 5 times. I wonder why it comes out so different each time? What does this test even mean?

Most providers have a local cache, as in if you download data once, it's kept on a local server for a short time, should someone else be looking for the same data. By doing the same test twice or more, you're most likely downloading from the cache rather than from the original site on the second, third and so on attempts. This would account for the increase in download speed over the first time. As for the differences in times, there's lots of influences..... too many to list.

As long as you get your data in a reasonable amount of time, you're doing OK.

Re: How fast are you browsing?

I tried from your link for the states and from one localy:

                        Vicenza,Italy....6.50mb/s download
                        ....0.36mb/s upload

                        Kingman,Az.......4.03mb/s download
                        .......0.38mb/s upload

                        Elk Grove,CA.....2.12mb/s download
                        .....0.24mb/s upload

                        Rochester,NY.....5.34mb/s download
                        .....0.39mb/s upload

What does this mean? My computer was outdated the day after I bought it.
Damn! Just seen one of those 'Tigers' flying past the screen. I'll get eaten alive!
