  • Need Opinions (be nice)

Anyways let's cut to the chase, so I've been driving a 98 Accord part time (my dad's car)..so now i'm about to go to school and i need a car.
So there are a few scenarios I need to ask you guys to see what you think is best since some of you guys are older and can counsel a kid like myself.
So..I'm 18 y/o and i'll be attending school driving daily back and forth. (20 min drive there and 20 back) Occasionally i'll go to gym and play tennis and even drive to the valley (1 hr drive)
    My scenarios are..

    1) I just drive my dad's car for 2 years of school then he drives my mom's Inifinite qx45 and my mom gets a new Bimmer 3 series..and me a new car after 2 years once the car is paid off.
    2) I ask my dad to buy a new car and he still has to drive the 98 accord and mom still drives qx45 =/..

So basically those are my two scenarios, i mean i'm a pretty safe driver . not into all that si racing blah blah turbo. I just commute to school..and back..and play tennis occasionally..and gym..and friends Lol

let me know what YOU guys would do and if you have suggestions on kids getting new cars or if they should get used first
    Thanks

By the way i wouldn't be paying for squat, but my parents will be.

Well, I'm not an old fellow by any means, but I will give my input. I have never believed (and neither have my parents) that a young person should have a new car. IMO, it's stupid. There is too much inexperience for something to happen. I've been driving for about 4 and 1/2 years and I still make mistakes behind the wheel. I never talk on my cell phone or text or anything like though while I'm driving. I've only had one fender bender and one speeding ticket, so I suppose I'm doing pretty good so far. Anyway, I'm rambling now, so back to my point. It is better to get that experience in a car that only costs a couple thousand dollars than a brand new car. Nobody is going to look down at you because you drive a '98 Accord. I drive a '95 Cutlass and nobody looks down at me. It's too early at this stage to be concerned about your status and what other people think. Easier on the insurance, too. I do have a question though, if you don't mind my asking. Why are your parents paying for everything? You ought to at least pay for some of it, because then you will appreciate it more. I'm sorry if you don't agree with that, but that's the way I was brought up.

Understandable. I just feel that it's wrong for young people to be getting handouts from their parents who think they are doing their kids a favor but don't realize when they're spoiling them. If your parents are willing and able to help you out, then I think that's great. My parents would help if something came up and I needed some money, but I work hard and try to do well in my studies. My younger sister is moving out next week, and so my parents are going to help her out with some of her expenses. But she has already been told she has to work to pay some of her bills and she has to make good grades. Otherwise, she's on her own.

I drove my parents car for the first few months that I had my license. It's a 1995 Volvo station wagon (turbo), a lot of people laughed the fact that a guy as young as myself was driving a station wagon, until they saw how fast it was.

I say that you should get a used car and make it look great by taking proper care of it. No one could say a thing to you if you are driving any model/year car that is swirl-free with a nice coat of wax on it, clean/dressed tires and well maintained interior. Take pride in your car, no matter what it is; you're a young guy, you have plenty of time to buy new cars when your older. For now, get something that can get you where you need to go and make it look good.

(For the record, I'm a year younger than you and I did not follow that advice. My first car was/is a somewhat rare classic and I am crazy about how I keep/drive/park it. I don't regret it, but it can be annoying at times)

I am a old timer. Having said that here is my take. You get the Honda, mom gets the new car. No matter how safe you are,you ca not predict the actions of the other drivers. Play it safe. Let the Honda be your test car. Then when your done with school and get a job get yourself a newere vehicle. Good luck in school.

When I was 17 my father bought me a brand new Saab 9-3 Aero. I'm turning out just fine 4 years later, so having nice things that your parents give you doesn't automatically turn you into an entitled brat that will never make it through the world.

That said, I know alot of people my age that are self-entitled brats and drive new cars. Correlation doesn't equal causation though.

If they're willing, get a new car. You won't be able to focus on your studies if you're always bringing the car in for service, will you?
If a tree falls in the forest and there's nobody there to record the event, how can you be certain that there was a tree or even a forest to begin with?

actualy..the 98 accord runs like a champ and we've had it only for regular maintenance.

Believe me---you'll be paying for it in ways you never imagined! Buy used. If you want a new one, buy it yourself after you earn that nice degree that will pay you the big bucks!!

                    Good luck!

Stick with the Accord....it's a good car and as already mentioned, let your maw or paw treat themselves to a new car.

I know this might sound kind of strange but from experience I know it's true. Have your parents buy you the new car. If your driving driving a car that you know your going to sell in two years and get a new one you probably wont treat it as well as you would a new car.

See what I'm saying? I'm 18 and just graduated high school and I can't begin to explain the things people did to their cars that they were given, but then once they got a new car they drove a lot better and treated it a lot better. Except for the guy that had 8 cars in the course of 2 years.
