  • Question about rims/tires

    On car rims/tires there are many numbers, what do they all mean?

    For example:

    What does 215/35/18 measure?

    It is actually a ratio (first two numbers), and the final number is the diameter of the wheel.

    In this case, 215/35/18 means the tire is 23.92 inch outer diameter of the tire, 8.464 inches wide, and the wheel is 18 inches.

      HMMM, not sure if I am reading Marks correctly, but....

      215/35/18

      215 = section width in mm or 8.46"
      35 = sidewall aspect ratio / sidewall height. 35% of 215 = 75.25 mm or 2.96"
      18" = tire & wheel diameter

      Good Info Here

        Yeah, we just said things differently.

        If you take the 2.96 sidewall, and multiply it by two (since it happens on twice when figuring total tire height- once above the wheel, and once below), you get 5.92, which added to the 18 inches of the wheels gives the total tire diameter of 23.92 inches.

            I'm not understanding the 8.464 inches part. What does that measure? The thickness of the tire times 2?

              That is the width of the tire tread side to side. Ie, how wide the section is touching the ground.

                DUH, haha I should've known that, I guess at the time I asked the question I thought tires were 2 dimensional.

                  Just make sure you get a tire speed rated the same or at minimum of what your OEM tires are/manufacturer recommends.
