I rent one half of a duplex unit. For some of you who might remember, I have mentioned in several posts that I don't have assigned parking on a high density street. After 9:00 PM most evenings, if I vacate a parking space, I pretty much have to park one or two blocks away when I return.
Because I bought a new car last year, I have hung on to my old beater (93 Civic) to hold a safe parking space on the street in front of my house for my new car. I try to control how close someone parks off my rear bumper by parking the Civic back far enough to where I can pull the Accord forward to create space when I swap out the cars, but even that's limited. The street is also 60+ feet away from my front door, which has made detailing my car a logistics pain.
But I just found out this weekend the unit next to mine is becoming available, the unit with the driveway, outdoor water faucet, and outdoor electric outlet all within 20 feet of the driveway. even though the faucet is for both units, I always felt conspicuous hooking up my hose to the faucet because it's directly under my neighbor's window. And since the outdoor outlet reads to my neighbor's meter, I have never used it. I always use a wall plug inside the house, forcing me to use 75 feet of ext cord.
My landlord told me that he was going to rent the unit for $150 more because of the driveway. I was extremely tempted, but couldn't justify that kind of money just for parking (trust me, I ran the numbers all weekend). But this morning my landlord called me and told me that he and his wife were going to ask only $50 more per month because I had been renting from them for so long, and steady renters are hard to find, especially ones who pay on time without fail. I'm stoked! I know this must sound comical to people with garages, but offstreet parking is as an important consideration as washer/dryer hookups and one that I will never overlook again.
Now I can sell the Civic and not have to worry about leaving the house after 9:00 (I get my nightlife back!
). Best part is I now have convenient access to detail my car, rotate the tires, change the oil, etc.
