I have been looking for a car to fix up, i've always wanted another VW, and this seems DIRT CHEAP, only thing is im not to good @ working on cars. Although im eager to learn and few of my friends wrench all day. But as far any value does this seem good? The inside seems very well kept for how old it is.

Re: Is this worth it?
If it's worth it to you, then by all means. An entire car to practice detailing on, not bad. You can attempt to fix it, polish it up, who knows? Maybe turn around and sell it for a cool grand. And with all of the invaluable experience you'll gain making this your project car, sounds like it could be win-win.

Re: Is this worth it?
I had a look Zuke.I don't know about the pricing for a european car in the states like that example. I noticed a couple of things. The front wheel arch has had some kind of repair. Rust? accident damage? the center console is broken(considering the age),but you might be able to get a replacment from a scrappy,if it's popular enough. Check the tailgate inside and out for any rust damage. The owner was honest enough--it doesn't run. Blown head gasket,,pricey unless someone you know can do it for you. You have to consider any other engine faults that could be there, big end, bearings?.And as the car doesn't run,you can't test and check/listen.
Even here in europe there are not very many of them left. They've been practically run into the ground.
Take one of your freinds that are good at mechanical work with you,if you go to see it?

Re: Is this worth it?
On a personal note...
Older cars are pretty easy to work on, even older imports.
California requires smog check on anything 1976 and newer which is a good idea as it forces people to keep their cars in good running condition because there's a lot of air pollution in California.
Coincidently, most cars and trucks built before 1976 and actually 1973 are pretty simple to work on because they don't have any complicated sensors or other components to complicate a simple process. (Engine = explode gas, push piston downward).
Basic tools are all that's needed for basic maintenance and R&R, (Rip-out and Replace).
Just my 2 cents...

Re: Is this worth it?
That is a very good and fair point Mike.I've worked on a couple of the old fiat pandas(not as old as '70s) and they are really easy and basic,as you say no sensors, no cpu's, only 2 valves per cydr, etc. The only thing for zuke,is that he says he doesn't have much experience on working with cars, but if he's interested he can learn, with help from freinds and possibly even books, like the Haynes manuals. They're actually not bad.
It would certainly be a nice looking car once it's finished!+

Haha! Just a heads up im NOT going to purchase this car. I think i was more excited to see a $400 price tag. Im moving soon, getting a 2 car garage, Meguiars Heaven answers my requests. Wanted something i can work on, but leaning towards a newer VW as in mid 90s. TDI's seem to be the car to have for gas milage, but i've fallen in love with the older body style so would love to bring back one from the dead. So nothing this second. However i will be making another purchase tomorrow that will surpass this by a mile. TO BE CONTINUED.
