License plate law/regulations?

I live in New Jersey, and I have a regular plate "ABC ##D"
Is it illegal for me to install a new plate with custom text on it like this in the front of the car? (So the front plate will have some random word on it, while the back will still have my registered ABC ##D plate mounted)

When a state requires front and back plates, they mean your proper registered plate.

From the little research I did online it seems that legally you are required to have both front and rear plates, but you can always get personalized plates for the front and back with your own text and remain legal.

As said, if you are required to have front and rear plates, you must use the ones issued by the DMV. You can put it on anyways; you may or may not be pulled over and ticked though. Your call, just like it is mine to not have a front plate on my cars though required.

Question in the same category. It is illegal to tint front sides in NJ. If I do tint the front sides, will my car have any trouble passing inspection?

If I am reading this correctly, you may tint neither the windshield nor the two front windows.

The car was bought in Rhode Island, which allows tinting of front sides. Then I guess the driver moved to NJ and then sold it to me. I guess if tint the front sides then I can just say that it was tinted back in Rhode Island?

You'll need to remove the tint prior to a NJ state inspection, otherwise you'll fail.

I bought the car as a lease return in Jersey, but the car was first purchased in Rhode Island, which allows tinting front windows. Can I use that as an excuse to keep the tint?

"Motorists will receive two matching license plates upon registering a vehicle. One plate is provided when registering a trailer, moped or motorcycle. For passenger vehicles, one plate should be attached to the front of the vehicle and the other to the rear at least 12 inches but less than 48 inches above the ground. Both plates must be clean and visible. The rear plate must be lighted so it is visible from 50 feet at night, even with reflectorized plates (N.J.S.A. 39:3-48b). Using license plate covers or holders that obscure or conceal any lettering on the license plate is a violation, with a fine of up to $100."

It think this applies everywhere. We can even get done if there is mud obscuring any letters or numbers on the plates.This was because it was done deliberately(rear plates) to avoid getting caught on camera. I think this an open case?

Simply put: no. Where the car is being kept, is what laws must be followed. Some cops may give you a break if it is registered out of state, along with your license usually (visitor), but they can ticket you if they really want to.

The tint law is for safety. You can move if you don't like it. The South has less restrictive laws (and better looking girls). Just sayin'.

It is for "safety" to a point. It is also apparently a "distraction" and "hazard" to all drivers, including yourself.

Police officers and state troopers also do not like tinted windows. They want to have a clear view of the driver and occupants. I would not expect a lot of sympathy from New Jersey cops.
